My surgery is scheduled for September 24th and was curious about what to expect the second week after surgery. My surgeon said that you won't feel like eating the 1st week of liquid diet, but what about the second week after surgery when you are the thicker liquid diet? Will you start to feel hungry?

Every one's going to give you a different answer here, but my response is yes. I have been really hungry during week 2. I am 3 weeks out today. I work through it though and I am doing my best. I am having a really hard time with Protein because the thought of it literally makes me want to hurl, but I am trying something else and will push forward. Best of luck with your journey. It is worth it!

PS: I have lost 23 lbs. since surgery. YaY!!!!

I wasn't actually that hungry the second week post-op, it was more a mental thing. I really wanted to eat. I say get creative with Soups but just thin them out with milk. That helped me a lot!

I had surgery on 8/11/09. I have to say that this last day or two, I have finally say that I am feeling hungry. I have stayed on my clear liquids-full-liquids and am now on the soft diet faithfully. I can't afford to blow all of this over some food. I find that the creamed Soups are very helpful in the food department, along with the Protein shakes. Yogurt is helpful too.

Just try to find things to keep yourself busy w/o always thinking of what you can't have in food. Think about what the journey's end will bring you.

I was banded 8/24 and I'm almost halfway through my 2nd week of Clear liquids. Yes, two weeks of Clear Liquids post-op per my surgeon. So, the first week, it's true, I don't remember being hungry at all. This week, I do occasionally get hungry. Then I wonder why I allow things to get to that point. There are always things that I can have to keep from being hungry, the sugar free popsicles, broth, Jello or a Protein Drink. I've gotten to the point where I just want to get the Protein out of the way, so I have a 40 gram drink in the morning and another at night. So I just fill in the rest of the day w/low cal clear things and that has worked the last couple days. We'll see how it goes. In the back of my mind, I'm hoping that my surgeon will advance me to full liquids tomorrow at my 1st post-op appointment, but I think it's unlikely.

Everybody's a little bit different, but hope that gives you a little bit of perspective on how it's going to be. Also, you might want to make sure to try several different Protein powders and ready-to-drink products to make sure that there are at least a couple that you can stand to drink. Because you really just have to.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
