Vaca time or Short term disability?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am not even close to having a surgery date or anything yet, but I was just curious if when people got there surgery if they used Vacation time from work or were they able to use short term disability? If you did use STD did how much % of your check did they give you? Also how long were you out of work on average?

Thanx

I was only out 1 week so could not use STD, just used sick leave. My friends who are having/have had RNY used vacation & STD, it does not start until after a week . . one friend was getting 80% of what she usually got in a check, but i think she has something supplemental at work. You've been paying for STD for years, I say go ahead and use it! Good luck to you :-)

I am not sure how much time I am going to take off after my surgery, it all depends on when I get to have it done. However, I do intend on using STD. My work is a little different from others though, I think. Mine pays the first 6 weeks 100%, after that it's like 60% or something. I am hoping to only take a week off but I have heard people taking 2.

It is a medical procedure so you really should be able to use STD, not vacation time.

Hope that helps.

I only took 3 days off work so I used personal time.

I plan on having the surgery on a Thursday before a 3 day weekend. That will give me 5 days off work and only using 2 days vacation.

Hmmm, I'm not sure how STD works (if it's state paid, I imagine it would vary by state). I do think there's a minimum amount of time you need to be out in order to take it though.

I'm hoping a week vacation and a week working from home might be my solution to this....do you have the option to work from home at all?

I was only out 3 days. Short-term disability usually requires that you use one week of personal time/vacation time before you can use your STD benefits. I used 2 days of vacation time and the third day, I used a bunch of extra hours to make up the day.

I work for a fortune 100 company. My Boss was great about this whole process. He was a new first time boss and I put him into a situation he had to learn this quick. I told him I expected to be out two weeks. He came back and said, our corporate HR said is was easier to just pay me that go through the whole process. I did work Christmas and New years into it so I missed a few less work days. I didn't lose any vacation.

I haven't had my surgery yet, but it's on the 28th. I'm requesting off (using vacation) on the 28th, 29th, and 30th. Since I have that Friday off, I don't have to use 4 days. And I'm expecting to go back on Monday.

STD varies from company to company and there are also various options you can choose including it starting at day one. This is the most expensive options so many choose to start at day 7- also as far as what gets paid that is up to you as well (if you pay for your STD) most of the time 60-80% of your pay.

Now saying that I will only be out for 4 days total and I am using vacation....

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
