5 day post-op dry gas heaving...

Recommended Posts

Please help:

My gas situation is NOT getting better, in fact I think something is wrong with my stomach. I am unable to burp at all, and I'm totally not kidding, I can not get any gas out of my abdomen. Yesterday, after having my 2oz. of Breakfast and 2oz. of lunch, both consisting of mothing more than broth and Protein shake, I can barely get down the 2oz. at a time. Well, I put a total of 4 oz. in and no gas came out, neither end..if you know what I mean..and I ended up at 4PM dry gas heaving in the weeds next to my son's soccer game. I was totally mortified.

I mean really, I'm 5 day's post op and I can't eat but 2oz. at a time. This just doesn't seem right to me and I've gotten to a poing where I'm like...does anybody else want to give me another obstacle to effect my weight loss? I did 2 weeks of liquid died, didn't cheat once, I'm now 5 day's post op and all in all I've only lost a total 8 lbs.

I'm just so frustrated.....I know I shouldn't focus on the wieght loss...but HELLO is this not the reason I'm doing this?

I am suffering through all us this with the worst gas pain ever...I totally need a break here. Somebody please tell me what to do about my tummy gas..

Thank you, Kerrie

Kerrie, I think you've done a pretty good job here. You've lost total 36 pounds including the 8 pounds after surgery. I had the surgery on the same day as you. I also did the two weeks liquid diet pre-op and lost a total of 16 pounds. 5 days post-op, I've only lost 5 pounds. I actually didn't lose anything form yesterday even though I only had Protein shakes and half cup of fat free milk. I was pretty discouraged to see the scale this morning as well. I completely understand how you feel. But we have think positive. The lbs could come down later.

I think walking is a good tool to get rid of the gas. I walk from room to room when I felt the gas pain and I am going to a grocery store with my Mom today.

A lady in my support group had the gas abdomonal pain so bad that the Dr. gave her a muscle relaxer that took the pain away in one day. And she was able to release the gas all day long. (if you know what I mean)

thanks guys...I appreciate all the support..thankfully I have some Chamomile and Green tea, going to go make some...as far as walking goes...I can not do anymore..I am seriously exhausted from walking a lot. I will also look into the muscle relaxer too, not certain how to take pills, I know we have to crush everything, but will the larger pieces after crushing dissolve?

Oh, and about the weight loss...that was all pre-surgery pre-liquid diet...I appreciate the support, this is just a long road and I have to get comfy for the long long ride!

Thanks again, Kerrie

Kerrie,

This is a wild and crazy ride for sure. I also got my band on Mon., have felt great everyday, went out every night. Woke up this morning not feeling "right", had my 8 oz Breakfast drink with dry nonfat milk added for extra Protein. I was light headed and felt weak in upper body. Had to sit and rest, took in a Protein bullet, took BP meds and sipped lemon Water. Feeling better now. Gas-X helps some, and I walk room to room to ease the air pockets, also take deep breaths to keep that stuff moving. I can burp and that helps, but moving my leg wrong at night will wake me right up with the jab. Sip as best you can and take plenty of time with all of it. Stay strong, we will get where we need to be. Surgery added about 7lbs. with the fluids they pumped into me, so don't forget to add that in. This time is for healing I have been told so don't worry about the numbers yet. Get the protein and fluids in, use a heating pad on the tummy it calms mine down. I also sip a hot citrus green tea at night. I was told that pills the size of an M&M were OK, I cut my BP meds cause it is large but with the way I felt earlier I just took the thing and crossed my fingers.

My only advice is to walk, walk, walk and use a heating a pad. Forget GAS X as the gas is floating around in your body cavity. If you're moving the gas will move.

Also, try not to be fixated on weight loss right now. Focus on healing...the weight loss will eventually follow.

Hi Kerrie,

I had the dry heaves after banding too. I even made a trip to emergency and they gave me something to settle the nausea. My surgeon's office said it was swelling of my stomach was the cause. Hope that helps a bit. I know it is awful but it will pass. Good luck!!

You need a back rub and you need to start walking. I'm walking the hall and around the dining room table, many times throughout the day. It has helped me. And, for the first time today, I could have Soup again...AND THAT PUSHED SOME GAS OUT!! Good luck, gas pain is not kind!

good question txspatter...I can't even get down 2 oz. of broth...jello...cream soup...NOTHING..I am so exhausted from dry heaving gas (who new that was possible)....I am totally a non throw up kind of gal...I didn't have morning sickness at all with both kids...haven't puked since 1992...and no I am not kidding...I walk constantly...:confused:I even went outside in the middle of the night to walk the street in my neighborhood..I was so out of it, I was half dressed. I just went to the mall, merely for a change of scenery and I had to excuse myslef from paying for my purchase to run outside and dry heave gas IN FRONT OF EVERYBODY ENTERING THE MALL!! :eek:Talk about mortifying! My diet consists of tring to get down broth and watered down applejuice in the am..i try and drink warm Water inbetween meals, but it's hard when nothing...and I mean nothing moves in there to make room for keeping hydrated. Then about 2 hours later I attempt another 2 oz of broth or watered down cream soup...I can hardly get it all in...I am SO full. So this evening when I went to the mall I got a small chicken Soup from the ChikFilae joint and sipped some broth off the top and that was it...20 minutes later after a sip of warm water I was heaving again! Seriously I don't know how I can carry myself I have no energy and I am certain I am not taking in enough calories...UGHHHH.

And seriously...weight loss is the furthest from my mind at this point...I'd like to make it through a day without dry heaving gas!

Thanks for letting me vent...Kerrie:cursing:

On another thread, a guy recommended the percussion massager for gas trouble. It works wonderfully. I am so glad I had one! I also got some mileage from the down dog yoga position, and making sure I was utilizing the laxatives. For me, the pain meds slow everything down, and that's when I get into trouble with gas. Having had lap surgery for another issue before, I knew to have the laxatives standing by. I recommend something gentle that you've used before, though. You don't want to make things worse by using a product that is too strong.

You are doing very well for weight loss. I don't see what you're worried about there. Before banding, I've never lost weight that fast. It sounds like you are moving around some if you're at a soccer game 5 days out, so that's good, too. Hang in there. It must get better or else all of the folks here wouldn't have done it, right? That's what I tell myself when I feel icky. Hope you feel better soon.

Wow! I can't even imagine the suffering with dry heaves!! Bless all of your hearts and tummies. I just had a little Tomato Soup, tasted wonderful...pushed a little gas out as well.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
