What is the fastest way to INCREASE my Iron?

Greetings all,

I have been enemic off and on for a long time. Now I am really enemic and hoping to be banded January 9th. I have been taking Iron when I can remember :blushing: (really trying to do better) but I don't like nor do I eat any red meat at all only chicken, turkey, fish & seafood. I don't want my low iron to be a reason to cancel my band date:scared2:. Any suggestions or ideas? :mad2:

Pressing toward the mark,

:rolleyes2:Raquel

I was anemic before my surgery and it didn't get cancelled. I go in once a week for an IV Iron infusion. Hope this helps.

In addition to taking Iron supplements, you can eat liver, dark green veggies, etc. My blood iron is slightly low and I sure can tell when I miss my iron supplements.

My Dr. likes to make sure you are on the high scale of everything before surgery. All my blood test came back in the good range. He had me on extra vitamin D some multi vitamins and I had to go in for some Iron infusion 5 seperate times and had a perscribtion for iron I had to take. Takes about an hour for the infusion. They put in a IV and let it drip in.

The only fast way I know to build up my iron is taking an iron tables every day, which I do. I do this to stay healthy, but also because I donate blood to the local blood bank.

Iron for Energy

In addition to providing quickly assimilated carbohydrates, blackstrap molasses can increase your energy by helping to replenish your iron stores. Blackstrap molasses is a very good source of iron. Particularly for menstruating women, who are more at risk for iron deficiency, boosting iron stores with blackstrap molasses is a good idea--especially because, in comparison to red meat, a well known source of iron, blackstrap molasses provides more iron for less calories and is totally fat-free.

Buccfan,

We must have the same Dr? I am on my 3rd infusions and have the bruises from the IV's. Did you have surgery at St. Francis Hospital?

One thing I haven't seen mentioned here is the inclusion of Vitamin C near the time of taking the iron supplement. Any citrus fruit or juice will help the absorption of iron from the source.

Buccfan,

Me too. My surgery date was November 25th. I have my first fill on Jan. 11th.

Eggplant, if you eat it with the skin on, is a good source of iron too. I love it and eat it all the time. It's good grilled, stuffed, stewed, and fried.

This sounds really cool, I don't eat beef, but this is something I can get at the health food store. That you so much for the info.
