New here: Tricare & Psych Eval question

Recommended Posts

Hi, anyone else here using Tricare Prime? I am interested in the lap band surgery and my PCM is onboard. I'm only waiting until my 9 m.o. reaches a year and is weaned from breastfeeding. In the meantime I am trying to get all my requirements meet..i.e. nutrition appt etc. My doc said she wouldn't do the blood work until I am closer to ready.

However, I am having trouble finding a psych here that does the evaluation. I am not near a military hospital (I'm in eastern CT). I did find one but she said I need authorization from Tricare but I was told this was a self referred appt. Does anyone have any experience with a civilian psych? Do I need to call Tricare for authorization?? Thanks!

Have your PCM send a referral for prior authorization to the person you found that is able to do it. He should be able to specify that you need an MMPI (or at least that's what my surgeon requires) and this is the only person in the area that performs the test needed for surgical clearance.

Good luck. I will be attempting the same thing. If that doesn't work then I will just pay out of pocket to get it done.

I have Tricare Prime(South). I had to have a referral from my PCM and it was to a civilian psychologist. They would not refer me to someone on base. I did not have to pay anything out-of-pocket. My visit was a breeze. It really and truly was just a visit. I was not administered any type of test. He said that Tricare only wants to know 3 things: Have I ever been hospitalized for a psychological disorder? Have I ever seen by a psychologist on a regular basis? Have I ever been prescribed any type of psychological drug? We talked about my husband, our dog, and my family and that was it. Super easy. Hope yours is as easy as mine. Good Luck!

I have Tricare Prime and didn't have to have a psych eval. I also didn't have any other tests, I just got a referral from my PCM and that was it. I had my surgery just under 7 months ago, so I'm wondering why it seems like everyone else needs to have one and I didn't. I find it hard to believe that they changed the requirements in such a short period of time, it took them long enough to cover it.

With Tricare Prime, you need a referral just to sit on the toilet or you will have to pay 50% of the total costs. Other than needing a referral for everything though it is great.

I have tricare prime south and I had to get a referral from either my WLS ( they werer hesitant to get me one) or my PCP ( they did it right away they referred me) . I did have to call about 10 different psychs before I found one who did evals for WLS.I am still trying to get tricare to find a nutrtionist. according to someone at tricare they willl pay for a medical nutrition appointment as it is a prerequisite for surgery. My PCP put a referral in for me last wed. I have not heard back.Any one have any luck with this??

I found someone and they even have an appt tomorrow! I had found one the other day but they didn't have an appt until Dec.

She said the report would take about a week. Then I guess I go back to my PCM for the blood work and referral?? I'm looking to do this around Jan/Feb.

I have Tricare prime and did not need a referral. If you go to Tricare's website you can find PSY docs/NPs that are in network in your area.

I am currently seeing someone who is a Tricare covered psychologist, but they will not do the test I need for surgery because they said Tricare won't pay for it. Yet Tricare is paying for my weekly talks that I self referred to. Go figure.

I don't know what kind of test they think they need. All they need is a referral. I just talked with her, she asked me a couple of questions...and then wrote the referral.

I have TriCare Prime (North) and I had my psych eval about a month ago. I didn't take a test- I just spoke with the psychiatrist and he wrote up a letter saying I was good. That was all there was to it. The hardest part is finding a psychiatrist to do it.

My surgeon requires that the psychiatrist perform an MMPI. They have particular paperwork they request be completed by the psychiatrist performing the evaluation. And we all know Tricare only requires what the surgeon requires. This is a requirement for my surgeon.

I don't know what kind of test they think they need. All they need is a referral. I just talked with her, she asked me a couple of questions...and then wrote the referral.

:wink5: I have tricare prime as well. The way it worked for me...

~Sept. 22th - I had an apt with my PCP for blood pressure medication, asked about the lap band, she said that tricare just recently started covering it and she would put a referal in for me...

~Sept. 23th - the nutritionalist (Erin Wilson) on base called me the next day and said she had an apt available that day so I took it.

~Sept. 23th - saw nutritionalist who went over how I would be eatting before and after the surgery and gave me some literature on eatting with the lap band.

~Oct. 1st - Saw Surgeon. I had a few issues with finding a Surgeon in the Corpus Christi area that was in the network, but finally found Dr. Griffin a general surgeon who is a bariatric surgeon as well. He said I needed to make an apt to see the nutritionalist one more time (total of 2 visits with her), have 6 weeks total wait before surgery, and a psychologist approval (he had a list of 2 of them in the area that were for Tricare) so i called for an apt.

~Oct. 27th - Saw my nutritionalist one more time to get my pre-op diet instructions. (Dr. agreed that I could follow the nutritionalist on bases diet)

~Oct. 27th - :ihih:(same day as nutritionalist apt) Dr.'s office called to say I was approved with tricare (before i went to the counselor for approval lol.. that was weird)

~Oct. 30th - and then went to the counselor (Aurora Ortiz) who sat with me for 13 minutes and asked general questions about my family and the surgery, gave me an approval paper to give to my surgeon.

~Nov. 4th - went to see my surgeon last week for surgery day instructions and orders for the hospital to do my preop blood work, xrays, and get registered.

~Nov. 4th - :smile2: went to hospital for pre-registration stuff. (blah took 3 hours of waiting around they were so busy)

~Nov. 10th!!!! :tongue2: - surgery is scheduled for Monday November 10th!!!

So all in all.... It went suprisingly fast. I am glad this is something that I have wanted for years now and that I did a ton of research on prior to initiating it all, otherwise I would have just been like a deer in the headlights.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
