Banded 10/21 and have ???

Recommended Posts

Hi -

I typed a nice post and was eaten up...UGHH! Oh well - this is brief of what I wrote!

Was banded on Tuesday, 10/21. Feeling much better today. Have a few questions:

- I have this strange feeling when I swallow that there is a huge lump in my throat - what is it? I was on Clear liquids till today and have only had a Pure Protein shake (which I didn't finish) and a SF pudding...so don't think I over did it.

- How do you know when your "full"? I only sip until I feel satisfied but as I mentioned it was only propel, broth until today.

- I kinda feel hungry and my stomach growls....did any of you feel this?

- How much did you drink post-op?

TIA - and apologize for the lame questions!

I was banded the same day as you! I am experiencing a lot of the same things that you are, including the growling - if not hollering - stomach. I assume most of it is from our guts being shoved around and having to readjust, and getting used to processing smaller portions of food. I just kind of eat slow and see where 15 minutes gets me.

I drink a little bit all day long so I don't dehydrate. I really hate this phase because I'd like some mashed potatoes, but I'm hanging in there as best I can!

A whoop whooop! to a fellow 10-21-er:thumbup:

I was told that that feeling up in your chest is the new full feeling. Even though you don't have any restriction, you are swollen from the surgery. Also, supposedly the lower part of the stomach can still grow even though you are full in the upper part. Also, you probably still have a lot of gas in there still. Good luck with everything!

Snow White:

Thanks! Wow - you have done great! Have you experienced hunger? I think that was what I felt last night and ignored it and went to sleep...this morning I slowly sipped on a Protein drink (my first) and felt better. Are you still sore?

BTW - are you in San Diego County??

I was banded 10/21 too in San Diego. Today was the first day that I feel a little better. The gas pains were awful!! My stomach growls but I can't eat much at all when I eat. The most I can have at once is a Popsicle. I've tried Jell-O and chicken broth but I feel sick after a few bites...but still hungry. I'm so afraid to eat too so I just don't. I drink small sips of Water all day. I can't wait to get out of this phase...it's just miserable.

SoCalfosh:

Where did you get banded? I was at UCSD w/Dr. Horgan. I too am feeling better today. I am the opposite of you - I felt sick w/the popsicle and better w/the broth. I guess everyone is just different.

I was banded on 10/22/08 with Dr. Horgan. Everything went well - I'm on Day 3 and Sunday I can have full liquids. Looking forward to skim milk in my Decaf coffe  Take care.

Hi -

- I have this strange feeling when I swallow that there is a huge lump in my throat - what is it? I was on Clear Liquids till today and have only had a Pure Protein shake (which I didn't finish) and a SF pudding...so don't think I over did it.

- How do you know when your "full"? I only sip until I feel satisfied but as I mentioned it was only propel, broth until today.

Hi! I was banded on 9/29 and experienced all of the same symptoms. My Dr. could not give me an answer as to why I had the "lump in throat" feeling. Four days post-op, the Dr. accessed my port and removed 1.3cc's from the band to everyone's surprise. I still did not get any relief from this so the Dr. ordered and upper GI @ 2 1/2 wks. The Radiologist said I still had Fluid in the band. Dr. said there was no way but accessed the port again and was able to removed another 0.5cc's. Finally three days later the "lump in the throat" feeling went away. The manufactuers put saline in the band to test them and usually the saline is removed from the band at surgery. My Dr. thought all of the Fluid was removed but he thinks it must've gotten backed up in the port/tubing. He has since had 3 pts. since me that this has happened to. So...you might want to call Dr. and see if he can give you an unfill. Everyone kept telling me it was my "full" feeling but I knew it wasn't as I was hardly drinking/eating anything.

The full feeling is definitely hard to get used to. I am now on solids and its weird. My "large" stomach says I'm hungry and will growl but my pouch says I'm full. Hard to get used to but you will learn.

Last question, I was not able to drink all the fluids that are recommended post-op b/c I would get full and feel bloated. Just do the best you can.

I hope this helps. I'm not sure if you are experincing the same thing but thought I would let you know b/c I was desperate to get rid of the lump in my throat. You don't want to be too tight post-op. Good luck!

San Diego Mom, I was banded by Dr. Horgan too. What did you think of him? I never met with him once until the morning of the surgery. He came in and asked if I lost weight, I said yes, he left and the next thing I knew it was over with. He didn't even come in to the recovery room.

Anyway, yeah sounds like we're opposites. Last night I tried some pudding and that didn't sit well. I didn't get a "full" feeling, just didn't feel so good. I tried sleeping on my stomach last night, it was a little soar where the port is but not bad. I ended up moving back to my back.

I was banded on Oct 16th and I had also had that lump in my throat. I believe it is just the swelling because everyday it seems to get better.

I researched Lap Band for almost 3 years and there was things I never read about such as the large stomach growling but the pouch is full. That was the strangest thing for me.

This phase of the band is a little discouraging but hang in there, it will get better. When you are putting on those skinny jeans you won't remember this part of Bandster Hell. At least that's what I tell myself!!! lol

Hi everyone! I was banded 10/21 too and am having the lump in my throat too. It's weird. Even a sip of Water does it. I'm finding that if I go really slow, it doesn't do it as much. Also, warmer liquid seems to sooth me more. So, I'm loving all of the cream Soups. I just blend and add more broth/skim milk so that it's really smooth. I think I'm at about 4 oz per sitting and it takes me about 30 minutes or so to eat it. I don't know if that helps anyone or not.

Does anyone's stomach feel funny sometimes. Like a "nervous" feeling or like you can feel things passing through. It's another wierd one that I have. :0) Take care!

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
