what foods are you choosing to eat before surgery that they have said you can't have after sugery? anybody planning on a special last supper kinda thing before pre-op diet? i have many ideas running thru my head...thinking about a big ribeye, corn on the cob, pineapple...etc...but have not planned anything yet...but i have to hurry and decide, cause i go on my 10 day clear liquid preop diet sept 1st....or am i weird, and nobody else is pondering on such a thing?:biggrin:

i don't even drink a lot of soda or beer...but i find myself thinking, should i have a beer before i can't? i know i'm crazy...i didn't get this big without a few compulsions though...:biggrin:

I started to get scared because I gained a couple pounds!!!!

I started eating the, well I won't have that again, crap, but at an excellerated rate. I went nuts.

So I went on a self imposed pre pre-op diet. I went out got some Glucerna and decided that it would be better than McDonalds or the three meal Breakfast burrito. I am finding that I need two cans, one at 6 and one at 9 but then a light lunch and I am fine. Instead of binging after work I drink one more. They are chocolate, my weakness, and only 200 cals. I don't have the sugar highs and lows. I quit drinking my Diet Pepsi - after 35 years of diet sodas. My first diet cola has cyclamates (not sure of the spelling) and I have gone whole hog ever since. I actually had to wean myself off because of horrid headaches. Of course now I am so tired,,,,,,,,,, yuck. I guess I just ate crap until I was sick of being sick. Now I am ready to go. Maybe my liver will get a little smaller and my tummy will shrink so the band will fit.

There are times I feel like I can eat half a cow and still eat more. This I have to stop. I am just glad I am feeling halfway decent on the Glucerna. I figure I can drink 4 a day with a light dinner and still be within my calorie requirements. But then again I see the Nutritionist on 9-3. Maybe I will have one more Dodger Dog on 9-3 at the game, for old times sake.

i am guessing from what i have read that the doctors advise different pre-op and post-op diets...i am dreading the things that i won't be able to eat anymore. i was told i could not have pineapples, beef, corn, anything with a stringy texture...but...i am looking forward to being healthy, so it's worth it...just the closer it gets the more i'm like...no pineapples? ever...? but i am getting my supplies ready...going today to get my diet instructions from the doc...i like glucerna better than the atkins shakes...atkins to me has an after taste...but i drink them...they help stablize my sugar if i have one for breakfast better than the glucerna...

well for my last super i had just about evrything lol lol some choc, crisps, chinese, chicken, soda...i went all out! i was saying farewell to the foods! but im glad i got it outta my system....another 7 days on this liquid diet and i will be banded...cant wait!! wooooo!!

OOOOhhhhhh I have had way too many last suppers! That's all that I have to say about that.

I thought about making some lasagna for my family before i started mine. That's one of my favorite meals.

Sorry to butt into a month group that's not my own, but I just couldn't let this go by without a comment.

IT'S NOT TRUE! Yes, you DO have to be careful in the post-op stages and pineapple, beef and corn are going to be off the menu for several weeks after the op, but you DON'T have to give them up forever! The idea of the band is to restrict the portions of what you can eat, not the types. Some people will have trouble with some foods but if you take it carefully, chew thoroughly and eat slowly, you should be able to eat very small portions of anything, once you've healed properly.

For example, I eat pineapple as part of my lunch almost every day. I had a small (2.5" section) of corn on the cob as part of my dinner tonight, together with a very small (2" square but thick) piece of roast beef (and some green Beans and a tiny baby potato). I still eat steak! I still eat Pasta (including lasagne!) The difference is before I would have gone for the biggest steak I can find, now I go for the smallest, most tender quality meat. Before I would have eaten a huge piece of lasagne (6" x 3" at least), now I am full on a 2"x2" slice.

Once you've healed fully, the more fibre the better to help the band work for you. Fibrous foods stick in the pouch and make you feel full for much longer. Here's a typical day's eating for me:

Breakfast: Poached egg + 1/4 cup baked beans (170 cal)

Morning snack: One of either prunes, apple, mandarin, tinned cherries, banana (any fruit really, except I do have problems with watermelon after a fill, when it's tight) (80 cal)

Lunch: Fresh garden salad (cucumber, celery, sweet red pepper, carrots, beetroot, pineapple) + 2oz cheese, tuna or lean chicken (200 cal)

Dinner: 2-4oz lean meat, 1 baby potato, beans, broccoli, corn (250 cal)

Dessert (yes, I said dessert!): 2" square piece of cheesecake (200 cal)

Throw in a couple of cups of coffee with skim milk and sweetener and that doesn't even crack 1000 cal for the day - and I'm losing at the optimum rate of 1-2lb per week, without being hungry.

You don't have to give up the foods you love forever. When you slow down and chew every bite thoroughly, you won't even miss the larger portions - a small taste of everything satisfies the cravings while still letting you stay on track.

After you are banded you are not going to care if you had something "one last time". Better to skip it and not add to the amount you need to lose.

On the bright note, I find that I can eat anything, just a little bit at a time. Nothing bothers me. Good luck

I did the big "last meal" thing. Steak, baked potato, mushrooms, salad... the whole 9 yards.

Now that I can eat again, I am the same way as littlebit. So far, none of the "painful" foods have given me any grief. I have had bread, rice, corn, even diet soda, without consequences (of course, eaten slowly, and in great moderation).

That last meal, in hindsite seems a bit unimportant now. If I want to go to the same restaurant and order the same meal, I can...(I will now just have enough "doggie bag" to feed me 2 more meals :thumbup:

I have been thinking about my "last supper" now that I have a date (Sept 30th). I don't think I will go all out but I do love pizza. I think I want a slice of pizza and a beer and I will be good.

Though... Soda. Everyone says I won't miss it but I will be a little sad to give up diet coke. I just enjoy it once in a while.

i ate everything that didn't eat me.....i thought i would never be able to eat anything again. BUT...to my surprise many foods are ok for me...if i eat slow and small bites.

i happened to be in Target the day before my surgery and proceeded to say goodbye to all my friends...Peeps, Twizzlers, etc...ha!!!

i had a good laugh for myself.

a last pig out meal didnt hurt me at all...and maybe helped me to get the cravings under control.

Fanny Adams, great to hear from a veteran bander here. There's so many conflicting opinions, and I do believe from everything I've read, that you just know what you can eat until try. It's reassuring to know that you're able to eat so many diverse foods, and enjoy them, but just in smaller portions.

My very last supper before pre-op diet was a nice juicy cheeseburger and onion rings from a great local restaurant. A week before, my official last supper, was a great great great steak from the best steak restaurant, hands down. (I know obsessing here, but I am on my pre-op diet, so please forgive me..lol)

I also had a Big Mac a few weeks ago, and, oh yeah, pizza. I really upped my exercise, and watched my food intake otherwise, and I lost three pounds from first weigh-in at the doctor's office.

I have to say, the pre-op diet is proving much easier than I had anticipated. I'm pretty sure my body has gone into ketosis, and after their first couple of days, I've not been hungry, and yesterday even skipped an allowed snack, because I just wasn't hungry. I looked up ketosis, and the web site I read said that one of the signs of it (besides the yucky metallic taste in my mouth), was reduced appetite.

i have to say it is nice to hear from someone that you did eat normal foods again...i have just heard people say at the group meetings, things like bread and stringy foods are really iffy and get stuck alot....so it thrills me to hear someone say something positive....i start my pre-op diet on the 1st...ready to get this show on the road...

Actually, since I started drinking the shakes, I haven't had cravings so I really don't want to have a "last meal." Isn't that weird?

Hi, I am being rebanded with your group.

Here is a bit of advice. What you miss is that big bite into something thick, hamburger, sub sandwiches, thick pizzas etc.

But do your last meal a couple nights before your surgery. When you have surgery your digestive track slows down immensely, then on top of it you will probably be given liquid codeine for pain relief. This adds to constipation.

Right now

to maintain our current weights we put down a lot of food. Literally what we put in one end pushs more out the other, large quantities. I think probably the average over weight person goes at least 1 a day. You will be amazed how little you will go after lapband. If you eat large quantities before your surgery you will be sluggish in moving it through, and also they blow up your stomach with gas to put on the lapband so it will be harder to move the gas out of your system.
