Perth newbie waiting to be banded by Dr Stephen Watson

Hi all,

I've got my 1st appointment with Dr Watson on the 21st of August (soooo far away) to get banded, and was researching lapbanding when I stumbled onto this site and was excited to see an Australian area!

I've been lurking and see that many Perth people have had their bands put in by Dr Watson. I am 37yo, 95kgs and 162cm, so my BMI is about 36. My family has significant hereditary medical problems like diabetes, hypertension and heart disease so my GP has been encourageing to lose weight for years. I have really tried, but for every kg I lose, I usually put on two after a while. My GP suggested banding about 6 months ago and I've only recently found peace with the idea, and now I can't wait to have it done.

Am looking forward to chatting with what looks like a supportive, inspirational community as undertake this change in my life!

Roxy, I'm almost 2 weeks out from surgery and except for not being able to eat as much as before, wouldn't even know I've had surgery. I have no more pain at all. In fact yesterday I went for a 45 minute bike ride - something I didn't think I would be able to do so soon after surgery.

I do think this is in part a testiment to Dr Watson's skill. I am very happy to have gone to him. :whatchutalkingabout

way to go roxy! thanks for your honesty, I hate being told I'm going to feel wonderful when I'm actually going to feel like crap. I'd rather know what's coming.

5kg down .. you're on your way!

lellow, glad you're feeling great, I'm so looking forward to being able to ride a bike once I've lost some weight.

Cheers guys!

Hey everyone, well I am on day 7 and still can't bend over, it took me about 20 minutes to put my boots on this morning. I don't know if something is wrong or if this is normal. I can do general stuff but I can't bend and have abit of pain. I read about all these people who went back to work 1 or 2 day's later and am thinking now am I just a woose or shall I ring Dr Watson.

Hi ROXY , I WENT BACK TO WORK AFTER A WEEK , BUT STILL WAS A BIT TENDER . HOWEVER I WOULD GET CHECKED OUT IF I WERE YOU JUST TO MAKE SURE ALL IS OK

Oh yeah I was tender for about two weeks. Even now, when I can't feel my port site or any of the incisions, sometimes I bend at the waist and get a pinch. Take it easier and don't rush it. As long as your port site doesn't get MORE painful (which may signal an infection), it'll get slightly better with each passing day.

Thanks for the reassurance, I did the shopping today and it was really hard pushing a shopping trolley fully of food around and load it in the car, I can't wait to feel normal again. Just out of curiousity is the port site the large incision in the middle or the slightly smaller one next to it?

my port site is the largest incision of the lot. About 6cm big? I can feel the hardness of the port about an inch below it.

Okay, I need to ask some dumb questions...

How long after the op can you get back to 'normal' husband/wife relations?

If you wear jeans (or other non-elasticated) bottoms, do they push on the port?

Can you feel the band or the port all day every day, or only the port and only if you're looking for it?

I'm afraid I'm going to lean over a counter and snap the port or something! LOL

Lellow .. way to go with the weight loss! 9kg already and only a couple of weeks.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey everyone back again, well its been 3 and half weeks and Ive lost 10kg and I feel great, there is no more pain and it so good to feel normal again, the scars are healing normal and to answer you question mrswal husband/wife relations are better than ever. I am so happy I have done this I know now it was the right decision.

hello, this is my first post here ... please excuse the nerves !

mrswal, i was banded on september 8 and although it was a very cautious process, my partner and i had 'relations' just over a week later. i guess it would be a case of try it and see ... everyone will be different but trial end error is the key !

My port is up against my sternum so the port doesn't get in the way of my jeans waist but if i bend over without thinking there is a bit of pain.

As for feeling the port all the time ... mine is still covered with dressings and is still a little tender but if i apply a little pressure i can sorta feel it - the band i don't feel at all.

Phew, that wasn't so bad after all !

take care everyone !

Jo
