Couch to 5k.....come join me!!

Hey there! When I did this before I stuck with the 3x per week and it was hard to get moving again after a 2 day off at the end of the week.

Has anyone just done this by doing every other day? Some weeks thats 3x per week others it's 4x but always wth a day of rest? This week if I ran today I wouldn't run again till Monday and that would make it alot harder to get up and at it if you know what I mean?

Brandy~ About the first three weeks I did 3x a week and then after that I did the every other day thing and it worked. I liked it better because I was only taking one day off between runs and it was easy to keep motivated to get back out there!

Brandy... when I started I ran every other day and made my weeks 6 days long instead of 7. So I'd move up after 6 days... if I was ready. That worked for me.

Good I thought I was just trying to push it too fast. I honestly plan on redoing weeks I am not setting myself up for failure. If it takes me 18 weeks instead of 9 I am ok with that. I just want to be able to do it and build up to something I can do on a regular basis.

The every other day will work better for me because I am already feeling like 2 days off would be way too long to get remotivated.

Georgia... Glad to hear about your headache freedom! Saying prayers that they stay away! Don't worry about the extra pounds... that will come off soon enough - beauty of the band! Just heal up and get back on track!

Kristen... you are such a great motivator! The trail running is really agreeing with you. How does the altitude impact you... lack of oxegyn?? Are you a teacher or in school yourself??

It has been one H of a week for me. I was out of town overnight and work has been crazy. But the kids go back to school next week and I'm stressing on the schedule change. My DS is switching schools, which he is not happy about, and it meant a change in bussing times, which required a new daycare... long story! So now next week he starts at a new place and then the following week my DD joins him. I'm really hoping this is going to be a good change for them. DD needs more one on one time during the day, which this woman should be able to provide. The added bonus is that the cost is almost half of what we are paying right now. We go from $45 a day to $25 a day!!!

I'm stressed about school, but looking forward to the routine again so I can get back on a normal running schedule! Its been a bit difficult lately.

Today (9/5/09) I completed my 1st ever 5k race!! My time was 32:17...I was happy with it as when I started the C25K program it took me almost 45 minutes to go the same distance! For those wondering if the program works, I'm proof! If I can do it then so can you!

WTG REALIZE!!! That is awesome!!

Well, I started the c25k over again and completed day 1 of week 1. All I can say is WOW! It was hard!! Feels like I'm starting over from scratch. It's amazing what 3 months of no exercise and 30 extra pounds does to you.

I ran around our appartments today, I wanted to be close to the oxygen just in case. Thank the Lord, it didn't trigger a headache! I really feel like the cycle has ended. My sister has the flu, so I decided to go ahead and start without her. If she still wants to do it, I'll repeat week one with her.

I am just soooo excited and thankful to be able to run again!! It feels GREAT!!

Realize~ WTG! Congrats on finishing your first race! Bet you get the bug and are wondering when your next race will be!

Kathy~ I teach high school marketing and business classes. I love my job - the kids are great! I love the trails and I do notice the oxygen difference when running up high. We usually run at about 5500-7000 feet. It isn't bad, but I do notice that I am slower and have to watch and regulate my breathing. However, it does pay off when I run in town, it is much easier. We are at about 3200 feet in town.

That is great that you are going to get a break on the cost of child care for your kids. It must be hard to find good daycare for kids with special needs. That is great that your DD will get some more one on one time and hopefully DS will make a good transition to his new school.

Run Brandy, run! I agree on the two days off. It is much easier to just find something else to do. Better to make it a habit and just run every other day.

GA~ I am so happy for you that the headaches are gone. I bet you are ready to be back running again. You might find that you move ahead a bit faster this time when you start the C25K. I'm just glad to have you back with us!!!

I have a 4.5 mile trail run, the last one with my class, tomorrow morning. Looking forward to it because we are on a new trail. I will let you know how it goes. We are starting to do a little bit of a taper for the 10K next weekend. I am excited about running the race!

Georgia.... Yeah!!! My C25k buddy is back! I'm saying my prayers that the headache cycle is truly gone! I agree with Kristen, your stamina will probably come back quicker. Just do me a favour... no falling!!!!

Kristen... hope your run was great this morning. I imagin your runs are very scenic. I love running in parkland instead of on streets. I find the sceanery is much nicer, and imagin trail runs to be even better.

Yesterday we went over the border to Pt Huron for some of your deals. With the Canadian dollar a bit closer to par it made a lot of sense. I got the kids 2 pair of shoes each, tops, bottoms, backpacks, etc. etc. etc. for just about $100, where here it would cost at least $200 or more. We dropped our DD off with her birth sisters foster mom and she spent the day with them (she doesn't have a passport to cross the border yet) and we took our DS with us. We had a ball and so did our DD. Today we're off to Toronto to visit family and go to Chinatown!

I took the dog for a run this morning. She kept dragging me, but it was good for her. We only did 2m, but it felt nice to get out with her.

I'm going to run again tonight on the treadmill when we get home.

Awesome run this morning! I did 4.5 on the Tumalo Falls trail. It was hilly, but more of a rolling hill - not super steep, even though it was climb. Beautiful views - I have to say, it is one of my favs and will definitely head out there again.

I finished strong and feel good about that. When I first started I was running at the back of the pack. This morning I finished with the front of the pack, with hills and all! I am excited about the race next weekend.

Kathy~ Sounds like a great weekend! Have fun. I love running with my dog - he really needs the exercise, but it is just a nice time to get out and be together.

hello i want to do something like this i live in nc and i am having my surgery on september 15,2009 i wont b able to exercise for even a few weeks afterwards i know i need to get into an exercise routine so i can loose all my wt i belong to a gym but havent gone in a while so i need all the encouragement i can get nancycarolsnead@yahoo.com

Nancy are you exercising at all right now? If not, I would suggest starting with walking daily until your surgery. That will give you a good start and a nice base to work from after your surgery.

The C25K is a great program that takes you from walking to running. The nice thing about it is the slow progression so you don't injure yourself. You can learn more about the program at: Cool Running :: The Couch-to-5K Running Plan

You can take the program at your own pace and if you have read any of this thread you will know that most of us repeated weeks as needed to build up our endurance to run our first 5K.

I would also suggest finding a 5K race this winter that you can sign up for - that is also great motivation. There are usually plenty of them around the holidays in Nov and Dec.

Just completed my 2nd 5k in as many days! I know, I thought it was crazy too when I signed up for two in one weekend. But it went great! Time was 29:34! Keep up the good work everybody...the program works!

Hello Couch to 5K buddies....congratulations on all your accomplishments.

I turned 47 this Saturday and completed the 10 mile run series in Westport, CT. My time was 2hours and 42 minutes. Out of 141 runners, I finished 140. It was such a high crossing that finish line. I want to set a goal to do a half marathon, but I think I need to concentrate on losing another 30 pounds first. It's a great feeling crossing out milestones, Good Luck and many blessings to everyone working on that hidden or written list.

      2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
