The beginning of my story is pretty quick; I started my lapband journey mid-June 08. I had wanted to have a band sooner, but my husband was very reluctant and is a doctor phobe. After watching a former student (we both teach) have success with the band, he was willing to support me in starting the process. After attending the info meeting, I was convinced this was the way to go and for the first time, my husband "got it" and was very supportive and ready to help me with my lifestyle change. I was able to get all of my doctors appointments scheduled in July, as well as lose close to 15 pounds before my surgery date of August 5, 2008. My surgery was smooth sailing and I was in and out of the hospital in 6 hours. When I came home from the hospital, I took a short walk that evening and I have been moving ever since. I was out and about moving irrigation pipe by that Friday and I have not looked back. I feel fortunate that I did have about 3 weeks before I had to be back at work and I was able to get comfortable with my band and "eating". I had my first fill on Sept 6 and I have had a total of 5 fills now and have good restriction. Exercise has been a real plus for me. I started with walking and then began the Couch to 5K program at the end of September. I love exercise and have since started swimming and cycling and plan on doing a sprint triathlon this summer. I cannot believe how good I feel and how much energy that I have.  At the beginning of this process I lost weight very quickly and have since slowed down. I have been in a plateau for about 3 months now. However, I am not too concerned. I feel that I did lose very quickly in the beginning and I have not gained any weight - I have stayed the same. In the past I would have most likely gained back at least half of the weight I lost! I love my band and it has helped me get a new active and healthy lifestyle that I am looking forward to for the rest of my life.
