Are you looking for the BariatricPal Store? Go now!

What is the rudest thing someone has said to you?!?!

Well, mine is very curly and if I cut it, I would look like Orphan Annie!

That's cute!! A girl I work with is like that...she has very curly hair and she said that after her lap band, she's thinking about getting it straightened! That's gonna look funny..

Okay...I have a great story for a reply to all the "when is the baby due?" comments...

I was working a second job at a plus size clothing store when a mother/daughter come into shop (both were overweight). As I was helping them, the mother asked me "when is the baby due?" I swear this is what I said..."Nope, no baby...just fat...Can I take your clothes to a change room?" I have never seen someones face turn that weird shade of red, and then she ran out of the store!! The daughter was stunned, and then blinked and just looked at me, and she went about buying clothes. I think she spent more, just cause she felt sooo bad. I laughed it off, but at some level it still hurts. I have always been a big girl, for as long as I can remeber. Sometimes things like that bother me, and sometimes i come out with "zingers". ;)

There are of course the usually little kids, pointing and mooing..that is something I am not going to miss.

Sounds like she's jealous to me. Has to say something bad about you to make herself feel better. I'm sure you look wonderful!!!

I went to my aunt's 50th birthday party yesterday and she asked me how much have I lost since getting the band. I told her about 25 pounds. I had just gotten off work and still had my uniform on. My snobby cousin said "Well, I can't tell that you've lost anything in those scrubs." I was very offended. I felt like saying "Oh yea, well, at least I can lose the weight from my ass, you can't lose those big ears."

Okay...I can't believe I just now found this thread! People are SOOOO mean!

I'll share ONE of mine...I started a new job last year, and I have not shared my journey with weight loss or lap band with anyone there. I was orienting with a girl who asked me...wait for it...

"Have you ever considered bariatric surgery?"

OMG!!! Talk about stunned! I literally was speechless for a moment.

Talk about bold. She obviously has no class.

Oh Turler - I think I would have had to slap her! The nerve...did you ask her if she'd considered a tongue transplant, she obviously needs to learn how to hold hers!

Well, after I collected my thoughts, I said, "well of course, who hasn't?" I am not one that is quick-witted. I can't think of come-backs fast and I usually find myself thinking about it later wishing I'd said this or that.

What makes this even worse, is that we were not talking about weight or body types or anything on that subject. She asked me that out of the blue.

I think this thread is interesting. It shocks me how blunt, rude and tasteless people are. How is it that our society has devalued humans to the point that it is somehow socially acceptable to degrade and humiliate others?

I'm the same way ya'll. I always think of it later. I feel like an idiot just sitting there, especially when I've been insulted. It has happened more times than I'd like to admit. It is sad that our culture has developed to the point where people no longer have a conscious or care what they say to others.

I think it is a delayed reaction. I don't do well "on the spot"...give me a minute to think about it, analyze it and then I react.

one of my most recent comments was I went in for a simple surgery and was in the process of checking in, the nurse comes in with a GIANT hospital gown and a bed blanket and said here we dont worry we have a gown that will fit you and here is a blanket to cover yourself around.

My 5 yr old son will also say mommy your not fat are you- he is FIVE and asks if "I am the right size"

hopefully soon I will be banded and mommy will be the right size lol

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
