Low Carb Banders Unite

Recommended Posts

I am back after falling off the wagon. I am going to low carb it until I lose the 5 lbs I gained and then add a few good carbs back. I need to get it through my head that I don't need junk.

It's funny. They tell us not to diet. This is a new healthy eating way of life. That doesn't work for me. If I tell myself I am on a diet, I behave myself better. I don' t sneak a little bit here and there. When I start to do that, I tell myself, no, remember, you're on a diet. That seems to work better.

I still can't seem to shake the diet mentality either. maybe someday. I am planning to work on that when I get to goal. until then, looks like it's a diet for me.

So, just thought I would pass this info on to you all.... I ran across a post a while back about these things called "Miracle Noodles"... supposedly zero calories.... so I found the website and actually there are a few places to read about them... so I got excited but they were incredibly expensive.... well I was at an asian grocery store today and low and behold they had them for CHEAP! They are a raw noodle (no need to cook) and they are made from Yams. They actually do not contain any calories, thus no carbs either. I bought some *just over $1 for a 7 oz. package) and fixed them tonight for dinner.... they are flavorless, you rinse the fishy smelling liquid off that they are packed in, then you dry them on a paper towel. I put them in a little olive oil and put some low sugar garlic spaghetti sauce and parmesean on them.... I thought they were great... the 7oz package filled me up fine and since they are neutral in flavor, they take on the flavor of whatever you make them with. So if you want a mock noodle with zero calories.... go visit your local asian market! I was impressed! Any questions, let me know!

Thanks for the info, Kami. I am always looking for something diffrerent. There is no Asian market here, but if we go to the Dallas area I will have to look for them.

I have a new favorite. It was passed on to me by Georgia Girl. It sounds weird, but is so yummy. 1lb ground sausage with 3/4 pkg of cream cheese. YUMMY!!

Yes, I would like to see this thread revived, too. I am low-carbing it, banded in June and losing slowly, but happily. Oh, and walking a lot, every day....:crying:

welcome Angel.. Keep moving. I am finding that makes a huge difference. I ate more carbs than normal yesterday, but am still in ketosis this morning. Weekends are the hardest...

Thanks, RenewedHope. Actually, I am not really new, I post occasionally (rarely) and have been reading a few threads (including this one) for several months now. I don't know if I am in ketosis (I don't bother with the strips anymore), but I do try to limit my carbs to the bare minimum...... However, I have a low-sugar oatmeal for Breakfast, an Activia yogurt, or cottage cheese for lunch, and chicken or fish with a bit of a green veggie for dinner. Whenever I vary that routine, I always go with Protein (eggs, turkey, etc.). I know it's not 100% low carb, but it seems to be what this fat old body needs! And I do agree, the activity is sooo necessary.

One too many carbs this weekend and I am having some MAJOR carb cravings today. So far, so good. I just whipped up a special little treat to try and hold me over until I am back in ketosis. Probably not the most healthy, but here it is. I didn't even measure. It was a crisis moment. Throw something together or go get a hot fudge sundae. Here is what I whipped:

cream cheese, splenda, heavy cream, vanilla, an egg. It was really very yummy, and with very few carbs. Can I live on this for a couple of days???

Oh that sounds yummy.

I really need to totally get sweets out of my system so that I don't crave

them. I have had bad cravings lately. I am hoping with my bf gone on vacation I will do much better this week. He is the one who does all the snacking in front of me and that makes it difficult. I don't know how people do it with husbands and kids around all the time.

It is hard. This weekend I ate 3 popcorn balls that I had bought for my boys. I keep them healthy Snacks, so we don't have a lot of junk, but they need the carbs, at least the good ones, so I feel bad to restrict them. I do things like fix strawberries and fresh cream for supper. I eat straight cream and no strawberries. Kinda a compromise. DH is really considerate though and that helps. He says that is I cook it, then he will eat it, and he pretty much does so that is good. This journey would have been SO much more difficult without his great support. We have made it a family affair. Today my 9 year old came in the computer room to confidently announce that our family is the healthiest in town. He cracks me up!!

Hello everyone. I am interested in doing low carb. I know just enough to be dangerous. Any help from you pros would be appreciated. I am going into my 3rd week post op. I am on soft foods right now. I noticed when I started them, any weight loss that i had started, stopped. I was already losing very slowly (PCOS), and adding thin mashed potatoes and all of those cream Soups (if I smell another one, I think I will gag) has not helped my weight loss.

Anyway, I just wanted to drop in for any tips/tricks of the trade to eating low carb. Thanks.

Welcome Slim. I eat no more than 30 net carbs daily. Net carbs are total carbs minus dietary Fiber. I also eat high Protein. I avoid all processed carbs. I really don't eat much bread at all. The only exception is an occasional low carb tortilla. You will have really bad sugar cravings for a few days and then your body will go into ketosis. This is where you really start burning fat. Hang in there, the cravings are rough, but once in ketosis they go away. Do a search for low carb or Atkins Induction. Hope that helps.

Ok, Yesterday was my first attempt at seriously trying low carb again. I'm not banded yet and am having a difficult time with my mind. As many of you, I've been on so many different diets that I can't seem to keep it straight. A part of me wants to do low fat, part wants low carb another part wants to do the Glycemic Index.... and so on.

I started low carb yesterday just going by memory for the most part. I don't have an Atkins book anymore and it's so hard for me to count net carbs in recipe's that I make. For instance, I made a crust-less Spinach Quiche last night so I have an easy breakfast for the next few days. I think I put 6 eggs, 1/2 package of frozen spinach, 6 slices of bacon, some Cheddar and parmesan cheese, onion, and garlic salt. I divided it up into 5 servings. Any suggestions on how much the carb count might be? And the fat, it seems so high, but if I remember right, the fat count doesn't really matter as long as I don't go over my carbs... right?

I would think that your carbs are going to come from the spinach and possibly the onion. Check the carb count for the spinach and divide it by 5 for the entire recipe. I looked at atkins website and it said 1/2 cup onion is 2.8 net carbs.

Wow... Ok, now I think I remember why I could never stick with Low Carb in the past.... There's so many hidden carbs I would never think about. How do you do it?

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
