Hi everybody! Sorry I've been MIA. I've got an appt for the 24th to do my computer test and meet with Dr.Clark at WLSC. I'm very excited and somewhat nervous. I guess that's normal though. Hope you all are doing well. :o

I'm ML from VA Beach. I'm having my surgery at WLSC - not sure who my surgeon is since I've been going through all the insurance requirements before they can submit everything to Cigna. I'm hoping to get banded in August. Very excited!

Hi Diane and thanks for the welcome, I am actually on pins and needles awaiting insurance approval. Do you think it's strange that I havent met my surgeon yet? Dr. Terracina was at a conference when I went to the seminar last month so I only got to meet Dewey his PA. I've heard great things about Dr. Clark. Did you find that the insurance coordinator was pretty on top of things to get you approved? Sorry for all the questions!

ML

Good Morning VA,

ML, doctor Terracina did my surgery, actually, I was his first lapband patient 3.5 years ago.

I would suggest you speak to both surgeons and decide who YOU want to do your surgery. They're both great, so you will be in good hands either way.

Let us know what YOU decide.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't think I had a choice on which surgeon. I assume that once I'm approved I'll get appointments scheduled to meet them.

ML, Dr. Clark did my surgery 10 days ago. He was the doctor whose seminar I attended. I think that's how they assign you, although I would think you could request.

Good luck to you and Bridgette. There are many knowledgeable people who post and give you support. I feel so fortunate to have found some of the best. :)

Donna

Thanks, Donna. Wow...10 days out! If you're willing to share, I'd love to hear about your overall experience from dealing with the folks at WLSC through to the surgery. Thanks again!

Hi ML, The person/people who processed the insurance end of it for me, made it positively effortless! It also was pretty quick (hearing back from them).

I requested Dr. Clark. Then, based on positive responses for Dr. T, I expressed a possible interest in changing dr's. The staff was more than willing to accommodate my wishes, I have heard nothing but good things about both doctors....and ultimatley, am still satisfied with Dr. Clark as my surgeon.

Thanks for checking in, HarleyNana. No word yet. My case is "pending review" with Cigna. No idea what that means. Wondering if Cigna will call me or my surgeon first with news of approval or denial. Ugh! I hate the waiting game. These boards have been a God send!

I got word today that Cigna (primary insurance) denied me due to lack of medical necessity and 24 month BMI. I called Tricare (my secondary insurance) and was told that a referral is not needed and all my surgeon has to do is submit the authorization. Can it be that easy?? Not getting my hopes up. You would think it would be easier with 2 insurance plans, but it sure isn't.

ML, so sorry about the denial, but even if you're not approved, put a second mortgage on the house or do what you need to do to gettter done!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
