banded 1/30 - why am I hungry?

I just posted in another thread but I'm looking for different reasons why I could still be so hungry?

I was banded 1/30 and still on clear/full liquids. I'm totally hungry! I do not understand how chicken broth is suppose to make me feel full.... or CIB LF Nosugaradded.... Doesn't that stuff just go right thru the band? Isn't only actual thick food that stays in the upper pouch giving me the feeling of fullness?

I was hoping the surgery was going to help me feel satisfied when I ate a small portion .... I feel the same as I did before.....:)

2oz of this or 4 oz of this is NOTHING... I need light a glass full of Water for it to make a difference.... I drink the 8oz of the CIB drink and still want more....

Thoughts?

You feel hungry because you are hungry! That's totally normal. Not everyone who had surgery on the same day or same week as you will start feeling hungry at the same time. It is different for everyone. (and everything about the band is different for everyone so get used to it!!!) The band is not ready to do it's job when it is 'installed'. They just put it around your stomach and, without adjustment (fills) it is just sitting there and you can basically eat like before surgery. You have restriction at first because you are swollen from surgery. Some people don't feel hungry for one week. Some don't feel hungry for one month. Some don't feel hungry for six months. You are healing. You are put on liquids and soft foods because it is important for your new band to heal. You aren't supposed to necessarily lose weight right now (although some people do and you might.) Concentrate on healing and obeying your doctor's instructions and once you start getting fills you will feel less hunger. It can take several fills to get to that place, though. I have had four and am not quite there. So the main thing with the band is to be patient. It is a slow process. Let your body heal.

Hi Grace, you just got banded it takes a while depending on the sz band you have. Your going to be hungry and not have good restriction until your band is adjusted. I was banded in sept of 07 and as of this past week i finally have very good restriction almost to much i think. This all takes time so be patient it might take several fills before your on the road to some good weight loss and feeling full.

good luck

What do u all mean by Full liquids?

I thought we were limited to 4 oz's every hour?

I was banded on 1-24 and I was on liquids for 2 weeks

I am not hungry at all!

but i'm thirsty

I just started soft foods on tuesday

and I have lost 38.4 pounds already.

It's a piece of cake!

I was banded on 12th Feb. I have been on slimfast shakes (220cals each) 3 per day and 2 Soups ('cream of' type but low cal). My doc told me that I could have anything that would go through a straw. After the Soup (200ml) I feel like I just had a Sunday dinner. I am having 1000cals per day

(6' male). I know for a fact that this will make fat melt off and I think its about the right compromise. I get hunger pangs, I mean real hunger, but a drink of Water makes it go away.

Come on ladies, its in the mind. You can do it!!

PS, I cant beleive how much rubbish there is on TV!

I get some pains in my back and under my shoulder blade, on the other side of where my band is. Is that what feeling full is?

I can't imagine 11 days out!!

ok well maybe i'm reading the signs of "fullness" wrong. When I'm just about done eating it's because I'm feeling chest/shoulder dulling pain ... Maybe thats the sign of fullness?

I just ate 4oz bended yogurt and 4oz soup and I'm feeling a little pain in my upperback/shoulders/chest.....

Is that what others go thru?

You were only banded a few days ago? I was hungry too (I've been banded for 6 months now). I found that as long as I drank all the fluids I wanted it was bearable. Some people dont feel full until their bands are almost full, so dont worry, your body will adjust and you will get better at recognising fullness! And some days are different to others as well...yesterday I ate breakfast, then 3 bread rolls, 2 eclairs, a small bag of chips and then a double sized dinner (I was celebrating something). A terrible diet I know, but today I've had a a yoghurt and 1/2 a cup of oats and it's now dinner time and I'm STILL full!

Nuff,

It might be advisable to find other "non-food" ways of celebrating. This is the kind of mindset that ends up causing problems. Not to mention it doesn't help your weight loss at all. Just a suggestion.

I can't for the life of me understand why people will do this after going through the pain and trauma of having a band fitted. I read so many that are not losing....why not? I think the answer is obvious.

I have the weakest will-power, but I have lost 23lbs in the 2 weeks since I started my pre-op diet, simply because of the commitment I feel I have made.

hey there u will feel hungry until u have ur first fill, don't panic it's totally normal what might make u a little more satisied is up and go or sustagen, drink it really slowly u will find it will satisfy ur hunger. Don't panic if you feel hungry it's only early days

I know we cringe when we see someone that says they ate 2 eclairs at one time, BUT it's easy for you, after being banded only 6 days, to not completely understand the mind set or level of restriction a person that is 6 months out of surgery.

Our motivation and possibly some surgery swelling, which gives us restriction can be more powerful right after surgery. Mine was.

Commitment is great, but as we all know it can fade, just like many previous diets we have tried, where our committment is strong on Monday and fades by Friday.

I totally agree more restraint is needed to be successful with the band and the person that posted that had a pretty bad day, but it's hard to walk in another's shoes. You and I have not yet reached the six month mark, so I'll reserve judgement for now.

Good Luck with your journey and hope you beat that coffee monkey on your back. And if it's all "in our minds" why do we get bands?

OK OK, I stand corrected!:wub::biggrin2:

Hi Shortgal!!!

I think the point is this....... (and Nuff I hope you don't think I'm picking on you personally, I see comments like yours a lot on these boards so I am speaking in broad terms, but using your post as an example) ..... I don't think there is anything wrong with treating yourself to a "forbidden" food, i.e. one you wouldn't necessarily have on a regular basis, every now in then. In fact, my nutritionist says that there will be times when I WILL take detours along the way and that the important thing is to make sure to get back on track right away. My original point was that eating three rolls, two eclairs (and I forget the rest) to "Celebrate something" is not a good mindset and one that needs to change in order to be successful. That is precisely the kind of mindset that made us have to have surgery in the first place. Oh, I got a raise, let's go eat! I got engaged, let's go eat! Food related rewards are counter productive to the bandster way of life. Treating yourself to a new outfit, a massage, manicure, jewelry or other luxury is much more beneficial. Even if you are celebrating something like a birthday, anniversary or other occassion, order a dessert and split it, have a SMALL piece of cake (if you can eat it) or a quarter cup of ice cream, eat it slowly and savor it. But three rolls, two eclairs and everything else? That's a recipe for disaster. Even six months down the road, I hope I am able to make good choices even when I am celebrating.
