Realize band vs. Lap band

Recommended Posts

Heather, Congrats on the baby, you must be thrilled. My only problem with my procedure is reflux. I had it before. Prior to the surgery I might have a minor problem 3 times a year. Since the surgery my voice is always hoarse and the acid drip causes a soar throat frequently. As I said I lost 60 lbs. since 10-10-08 and still have not had a fill. The weight loss is great but I just want to feel like myself. I know in time I will.

My surgeon and his staff could not offer any medical reason of whether to go Realize or for the Lapband. It was basically a toss-up and they were willing to place both. I looked everywhere to try and make a final decision but did not find anything that really pushed me strongly one way or the other.

I chose the Realize band and I have lost almost 100% of my excess weight in less than a year. However, I may have done just as well with Lapband and will never know any real difference.

However, I can say that until I got to my sweet spot, I didn't have any restriction. It was like being unbanded until restriction hit me like a ton of bricks. Once I finally did get restriction with the Realize band - I stayed at the same fill level almost six months before I got an unfill due to pregnancy.

I can't speak for the Lapband, but for my Realize band . . . it takes a while to get to where you can feel it, but once you are there you stay there and adjustments are just very narrow changes in fractions of a cc. It worked for me.

Let me say at first thank you for sharing this post. I had my LAP BAND surgery 10-06-08 and I feel completely unrestricted. I have had two fills thus far..I feel the same right now as I did before the lap band...I hope I find my sweet spot soon I haven't lost weight yet..I feel like a complete failure...My next fill is January 21st..Wish me luck

I am really surprised. We had our surgery 2 days apart. I've lost alot (60 lbs.)but I also pay close attention to what and when I eat. I never was a sweet or carb eater but I could eat alot of what I liked. Since the surgery I do eat until I am comfortable, NOT FULL and it stays with me longer. I may (?) get my first first fill in 2 weeks. My concern is that I am still dropping weight and still have a reflux problem and I don't know if I want any volume at all put in until my reflux resolves itself. My Dr. is a nice enough guy but I take a pro active interest and I am in no rush for a fill just yet. When you hit your sweet spot you will drop lbs like crazy. With everything you went thru don't let it get you down. BEST of luck to all of us.

Thanks so much for sharing...I think you need to talk to your doctor or even your reg. MD. My Doctor placed me on Pantoprazole (Protonix) 40 MG once a day for 6 months to control my stomach acid. Maybe your doctor can put you on this or Nexium. I had Acid Reflux years ago so bad I thought I was having a heart attack, so I can see how bothersome it can be to deal with daily...I haven't focused on myself much so I need to get focused ....But again I feel pretty much the same as I did before surgery. I wonder how many other people are like myself..Thanks again...

I just got my Realize band on Dec 12th and really don't feel any restriction. I can eat anything I want, just not quite as much as I used to. I did have one incident where I think I either ate way too much or didn't chew enough and felt incredible pain for several hours. But other than that, I don't really feel any different than before surgery. My first fill is the 19th and hopefully that will change things.

RedMom..Thanks for sharing it helps make me feel not so alone. I know everyone is different but is so discouraging when you hear one had surgery and has lost 60 lbs and haven't had a fill yet..My Aunt went many months to no sucsess and know she's down 70lbs... We all have are own stories it's just nice to be able to share here...THANKS To ALL!! Best wishes with your first fill, my first went real well. My second one was hard due to the fact they said I had a lot of scar tissue built up..I've been massaging the area hopefully it helps...Keep me posted...:)

I got the Realize band- and I just found that out at my follow-up appointment today! My doctor says there are extra little "grabbers" on the Realize band that keeps it from slipping. I have no fill- and have lost 19 lbs in under 2 weeks. I feel restriction already- thank goodness! Good luck to all!

Getting back to eating regular food also happens faster with the realize band.

How does this work? It doesn't seem like this would make sense, but if this is true, that's very cool!

My surgeon's partner wrote this article about getting an Adjustable Gastric Band and it talks about Realize vs. Lap-band. I thought people might be interested in a surgeon's perspective:

LAPSF

To address the above comments.... Realize band is high volume, low pressure and Lap-Band is low volume, high pressure. (This is mentioned in the article I linked to.) The theory is that the wide reservoir (high volume) with it's low pressure keeps food from getting stuck as easily making it easier to eat real food.< /p>

My surgeon mentioned this in a seminar, but he also cautioned that there is no data so it could be marketing hype. It certain sounds plausable, but who knows?

That's a very good article, MacMadame. Thanks for linking it.

This is not telling the complete story. The Lapband AP data is 62% excess weight loss at 12 months.

The data he is referring to (40% ewl with the lapband) is not with the current generation lapband and the bands were not implanted the same way they are now. In addition, they LapBand AP is a low pressure, low volume balloon which what is used today.

The old Lapbands 9.75 and 10 is what he is citing in this article. He is comparing the old lapbands with the Swedish(Realize) band which is irrelavent because no one uses the old generation lapbands anymore. Although this is a good article, the doctor is either not up to date on the information which he is presenting or purposly ommiting the current data. Either way, that's a little scary.

Well since you're once again posting misinformation I figured I tell everyone the truth. Forgive me wanting people to make their decision based on facts, not your doctor who has all his facts mixed up. You should tell him to go back and take another certification course because he has no idea what he is talking about. The article cites 7 year old data and bands that aren't used anymore.

I just had my surgery yesterday. When I went to my seminar back in June 08, Fairfield County Bariatrics was only doing LapBands and Bypasses. I was about 20 minutes from surgery when my surgeon said, so we're all set for the realize band. I said to him I thought you didn't do the realize. My surgeon explained to me that he as done 7 prior realize band surgeries and likes it better than the LapBand. He also said that the port doesn't puncture like the LapBand. That was what sealed the deal for me. I decided to go for the Realize.

Thanks for everyone's info on the differences. I didn't research the Realize band before hand.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
