Thanks Phyl, I think I will stay for a hr or so and go have some Soup somewhere, just to make sure. I don't know how big my band is, but I will find out at that visit. I am not a worried about the numbing part, I am a pretty tough cookie.

I will be 50 next week so I am going to start reading this thread as maybe I will have more in common with people my own age? Please tell me the 50's are not worse than the 40's were.

The fifties beat the hell out of the forties, with the possible exception of a few aches and pains that weren't there before. :smile2: I took up horsebackriding again after a 28 year hiatus, I quit my legal job and started writing for a newspaper, I started teaching dance again, I made a committment to a healthier life, and I got to be a grandmother! Welcome to your fifties, Cheri, and an early HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Good to know I was not too fond of the early 40's so looking forward to the 50's being good.

Well, the surgery is done (Wednesday 10-27-10) and now I am recovering at home and decided to stop by here again for some great advice. I am still in the "gas pain" stage but have stopped taking the pain meds. I wish there was a better solution for the gas pain but I am doing everything I read here at Lapbandtalk including; Mylanta, Gas-X. Heating pad, and walking but I am looking for any other suggestions. Amazingly I have lost 13 pounds since weighing myself last weekend! I guess the gas pains are keeping me from taking in fluids as much as I should. Looking forward to the next steps!

Hi Doug, congrats. I have to say, walking was the best thing I could do for the gas. But please, get your protien shakes down or you will not have the energy to walk. Are you using vitiamins? I do a chewable C and a sublingual B-12. Can't do the multi one, it makes me sick to my stomach, even now 4 weeks out. Good luck:thumbup:

Hi all. Got banded June 18, 2009. Reached goal in January, 2010 just after turning 58 in Dec. Fifties way better than the 40's, except for dating at the end of my 40's after a rough divorce and my kids going through their teens and early 20's. Now my kids are all out of the house and I get to go see grandchildren. I have very meaningful work teaching at-risk urban children and I know I make a difference in their lives. I did have various repairs, removals, and replacements throughout my 40's and 50's but am currently in pretty good shape, especially now that the weight's off. Getting close to my 60's now. Should be an adventure.

Thanks AG! Well, I was able to get some good Protein shakes from a Nurtrition store locally where the owener actually had Lap Band surgery so he was very helpful with the Proptein mix and some great powdered Vitamins that I mix into my Protein drink!

I am using Nutek Pro5 for the Protein Drink and Nutek Nature's Fuel as the Vitamin supplement. They have two flavors of each and I found the chocolate flavor protein with the berry flavor natures fuel works best for me.

Gas pains are getting better and I am walking them off!

Cheri

Hi Cheri and welcome to the 50s.

I'm 57 and I NEVER want to go back. I have found this such a liberating season. My kids are all grown up and left home = peace, less stress on budget and freedom with my husband of nearly 30years. We're moving into a wonderful new place that is smaller in land but better in spaciousness which symbolises this season I'm in. Love it!

The greatest changes have come in my attitude towards people and the world. I used to really worry in my 40s, about what people thought, said, and observed about me. Now, I'm simply not that interested unless it's a beloved lifelong friend or family member.

I have time, experience and knowledge of how I want to spend my days, weeks, months and year. This year was about intentional living and doing things differently. So, I abandoned the dieting club of 20 years and had the banding done in Sept - our spring. I took a year's sabbatical from counselling as I was feeling burnt out and to my surprise I have NO GUILT. I motivated that we sell our house and move- it's happening and that my husband and I have regular marriage time -theatre dates galore!

I don't take myself so seriously anymore and find myself far more forgiving about others - they too are fragile in their humanity and everyone has their unique story of pain!

Lastly (there's so much more!) I am grabbing hold of life as best as I can and giving myself permission to have fun and spoil myself. Off to an art weekend at the beach with my art group; a ballet outing with my adult daughter to see Cinderella while the men babysit and a trip to Cape Town in 6 weeks to see my sister. I'm sooooo blessed!!!

So... it's an ongoing season of learning, experiencing, cherishing and evaluating what is important and ditching what isn't. Those books have to go!!!

This is your 'find the real me' season so enjoy doing the homework! I had to mourn the new wrinkles, slowing down, forgetting names, not having another 50 years left....etc for a while and it is okay  but more importantly is to get on to the list of new dreams for the decade and to Celebrate maturity.

Best wishes for the journey you're about to embark on. Des

Just love what you're doing in your 50s Llyra especially the dance part! Would have joined your class if I wasn't so far away.... Africa! I'm a HUGE fan of "So you think you can dance." Reading your note above just gave me such a warm feeling about this site and the lovely people who write in. It's not always plane sailing for everyone but there is so much caring and genuine kindness.

Hi Cheri - what an encouragement on hearing that you reached goal in January. I'm just 7 weeks post op so it was wonderful seeing your success. CONGRATULATIONS:smile2:

I turn 58 next year July so I pray that I will have shed this weight by then. I haven't felt significant restriction and have had only one fill of 4ml last week -my first and only fill. My question is, when did you really see the weight coming off? Was it once you felt restriction? I'm white knuckling it at the moment and never get a sense of fullnes/satiety and it's pure discipline not to go over 1 1/2 cups of food. Would value your input.

Best wishes - Des (Bunny)

Bunny7, I just loved your upbeat post. I am 51 and a high school counselor. My children are grown and my husband and I will Celebrate our 30th year in a couple of weeks. (seems like we have a lot in common) I think I will cut and paste your response and when I start to revert back to the past I will pull it up;) I love your analogy of the seasons too! Wishing you the best!

Bunny and Suejack,

You both have great attitudes. I am 62, and have been banded for 1 year. I sometimes have lows, but mostly am high on my weight loss and life. You are both starting the best times of your lives. 50 was good, 60 is better. My husband and I have 2 grown childen, 2 grandchildren, and just celebrated 40 years in May. Enjoy!!!! I took early retirement and am living off my IRA. My house is paid as is the swimming pool out back. I retired to Florida 4 years ago. I am, also, in a happy place. Karen(kll724).

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
