I don't want my neighbors to see me

Recommended Posts

While in the hospital (Sept 21, 2023 for me), my surgeon has said I'll be walking 5 minutes once an hour. For those of you whose surgeon recommended a similar regimen, for how many days do I need to carry on this onerous regimen? I don't mean the walking is onerous; just the having to set the timer for every hour. How can I get any sleep?

If this goes on only the first 24 hours post-op I can surely deal with it. But if I need to keep this up for a few days or longer, I'm wondering if perhaps I should get an elliptical or treadmill for home. The only reason I'm all wigged out about this is because my living quarters are very tiny and I can't walk for 5 minutes inside my apartment. Just can't. Which means go outside and walk around the block. Why is that so scary? Because all my neighbors are busybodies and I simply don't want them to see me out there every hour wondering what is going on.

For the past two years I've done my daily 30-minute walk at 5 a.m. when no one can see me. This is critical to my psychological well-being. So, I'm just wanting to know two things here: for HOW MANY DAYS do I need to walk 5 min of every hour? And when can I start exercising just twice a day (which I can do when it's dark outside)?

That's a discussion for your team. All my paperwork said 5 minutes every hour, too, but post op they had me walking 15 minutes every hour and sent me home with that. We live in the 55+ section of our mobile home park, so I totally understand busybodies!

I still did it but I timed it around the worst of the lot as I knew when she was done walking her dog I had a couple hours. 😏 My team basically said 15 minutes every hour working up to 40 minutes a day.

Ultimately I did longer walks less often a day, but still getting at least 30 minutes for 2 walks, then shorter ones as well.

I doubt that that the surgeon means get up every hour for the time that you are sleeping but maybe best to put that question to your team. Walking for 5 minutes every hour doesnt mean you have to go any where. Put a five minute song on and walk on the spot. Just getting your body moving will help your body get the circulation going to deal with any possible clots and help your lymphatic system to deal with any nasties.

As for any nosy neighbors - Who cares what they think? You have started on this journey for your own physical well being. Be true to yourself. Walk in the sunshine and get some Vitamin D in. 😀

To aid with surgery some surgeons pump you full of gas so that they can see in you better. Mine didn't but many do. I believe its quite painful too. These people had to walk to shift the gas. As stated above it also stops blood clots especially if you are not giving yourself blood thinning shots.

You are not going to be able to walk, like before surgery, its more of a hunched waddle for a few days. They do not expect you to wander off around the block. Going to the loo, making a drink and brushing your hair can all be in hourly goal. As long as you move yourself out of bed or the sofa the job is done. I imagine within 5 or 6 days the gas will be gone from you and you can let up because by then you will be more mobile

After you feel able and you have mastered the full time job of drinking, by all means attempt your morning walk. This is big, invasive surgery and sometimes we dont realise how big because we are only in hospital such a short time.

This made me giggle, the picture paired with it was perfect!! The others are right though, it really is just spending a few minutes on your feet, getting your blood moving in your legs. I usually take this time to make the cats chase their feather toy which becomes a self perpetuating game because cats can tell time and will nag you to get up every hour so they can play. LOL It is amazing how quickly time adds up by the time you've used the bathroom, made a drink, and harassed the cats. My watch fusses at me every hour to get up and move!

Update: I got an elliptical! Problem solved. It's amazing what people get rid of on Facebook Marketplace. There were over 30 ellipticals to choose from, with at least half of them anywhere from free to $50. I paid $35 for this one, and am over the moon. It glides so smoothly, and only takes up 2-ft by 3-ft of floor space. 1752598890_Screenshot2023-08-21at2_28_50PM.thumb.png.d9d2e0945909f023654ebb6b704dfebc.png

I weighed 199 pounds (90 kg) this morning! I felt accomplished and happy, and celebrated by going to the gym to lift some weights. Hoping everyone else out there is making progress, whether you are pre- or post-op 😊
Today is 7 weeks and two days post-op for me. I've been through two stalls already, but I am sticking to the program. I want long-term success from all of the sacrifice and pain. You all know I mean!

Okay so, as of yesterday my insurance company contacted me direction to say, that I was approved and have completed all the required items on the "To Do List". so, I should be getting my appointment next week for meeting with the Anesthesiologist. I'm very excited/nervous, but extremely happy too.

Tomorrow will be 7 weeks since surgery. Yesterday i found that I was able to finally drink more than a sip at a time. I am SO grateful! I have always loved drinking water and it has been my primary beverage for most of my life; losing the ability to drink a lot of it was my first post-surgical regret. Being able to drink more than a tiny sip at a time makes me feel so much more normal.
I'm eating around 500-700 calories a day, and have hit my second stall. I have begun to only weigh myself once a week. I've made to the gym twice since surgery, but I've been walking my pup and walking at work up to 3 miles a day on average.
I've also been using resistance bands and stretching. I'm not quite ready for twisty yoga stuff yet. Or jogging. I did do a 10+ mile bicycle ride last weekend with a friend to a coffee shop where I had a cold decaf coffee with half and half. That was another activity that made me feel kinda normal.
I'm still drinking one protein drink a day, trying to hit my goal of at least 60 grams a day. Today I got 72 in thanks to a cold G Zero with 10 grams.
My abdomen is still a bit sore in general. The way I understand it, the inside is not fully healed until 3 months after surgery. That means sometime around November 1st. This is when I will go on the forever way of eating according to my provider's plan. I look forward to that day.
Oh! And I should mention that I learned about a chain restaurant that is in about 30 or so states. It is called Clean Eatz, and they have a menu that is friendly to we bariatric patients. My support group last night talked about getting pizza and flatbreads from there. I checked it out and it looks like it's both eat-in and takeaway. This is the first place I'm going when I feel ready to eat out again

Does anyone know, how long it takes for Medicare to approve surgery?

I think it depends entirely on what guidelines you're being referred under. I had that kind of insurance through the state as a low-income person for 10 years and even though I was over 400 lb for 10 years they denied me. All based on the fact that I did not have diabetes. I switched insurances once I was offered a different kind of coverage from work and was approved within two months

        Medicare or Medicaid?

They both have a serious of hoops to jump through before you can meet the surgeon. After you meet the requirements and as long as you do not run into any gatekeepers, the surgery will be okayed by your insurance pretty quickly after the surgeon clears you. One other consideration is when the clinic will actually schedule you for surgery THAT can take awhile depending on how backed up they are.

I got a little bag of samples when I saw the nutritionist last week. Turns out I much prefer the Celebrate 45 Tropical Twist vitamins to the Bariatric Fusion orange flavor, so I've placed an order for those and the sweet treat assortment of calcium soft chews, which were almost dangerously tasty. The Unjury chicken soup was better than the other brand I tried, but not enough to buy it. And their vanilla shake was vile. I just can't do artificial sweeteners, and probably not vanilla unless I add something to it to mask the flavor. The aftertaste was so strong and I had a vague impression of drinking baby formula. So far the only ones I've really liked have been the orange and peach flavored Syntrax Nectar Naturals, so I'm going to get two vegan fruit flavored options in case I have trouble with whey after.
