5 weeks post op retching?

Recommended Posts

Almost 5 weeks post op. Occasionally I will start dry heaving or retching. Not necessarily after eating or drinking either, it almost feels random. This happens 3 or 4 times a day usually. I don’t actually throw up, I’ve only puked once or twice post op.
Is this normal? It really sucks.

Reposting in this forum because I had no responses in the other.

I was prescribed anti-nausea medication {Ondansetron 8mg) by my surgeon 1 week before my surgery in anticipation of my needing it. I used it a few times but usually after eating. Regardless, Nausea is expected.

I would contact your doctor and let him know what's going on though, as to the frequency of it. 3-4xs a day seems a bit much. He can determine if you need to be seen or prescribe meds.

I agree. I think you should talk to your team. Sorry you're dealing with that. It sounds miserable.

Ask for a prescription for anti-nausea pills. I have had horrible off and on nausea since my surgery and the dry heaving thing happened every time. Mine is due to meds I take and also my MCAS. I once went on a two hour road trip and gagged the entire time lol. For almost 3 and a half years I wasn't able to actually vomit even once. Until yesterday, that is. When I threw up yesterday I was actually happy about it lol. I'm taking a huge amount of meds due to my trigeminal neuralgia and they make me incredibly dizzy and nauseous so actually throwing up made me feel sooooo much better! But yeah... ask your doctor about anti-nausea meds.

Wondering if this ever resolved for you? I’m 4 weeks out and I’m dealing with the same issue. Zofran 8mg is not doing it for me. X-rays shows acid reflux even though I don’t feel or taste it… I was eating normally and advancing in my diet, following orders and all of sudden half way third week I couldn’t eat or tolerate anything anymore. I can’t also have any Protein at all cause I will throw up. Imaging showed everything was good. Now I’m worried I will de compensate.

@gabbieox7 I'm going through the exact same thing. At 3 weeks I couldn't eat/drink anything without getting sick. I went in and had a scan and everything looked normal, the doctor even had me get fluids. I'm not 4 weeks post op and still having the same issues. Some days are worse than others. The doctor did say it can be normal for sleeve patients. I just want to feel normal again.

I feel awful that you all went through this, but thankful at the same time because now I know I'm not alone. Please tell me if went away after a few weeks! I was so happy to be able to progress to the soft food diet, only to go back to liquids after a few days because the idea of eating made me sick. You'd think I'd be able to hit my fluid goals at least but the closest I've gotten is 48 ounces.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
