It’s best to get used to how you’ll be eating the rest of you’re life. Smaller portions and preop diet helps!

I am on day 8 of 14 for preop diet. (Surgery on April 18th) So during this time i obviously have to do the diet but the week before i started i kinda had a few unhealthy items that i knew i probably would not eat again like Krystals cheeseburgers, Chik Fil A, Puerto Rican Tripleta sandwich, and mcdonalds lol.

There’s no right or wrong answer. Some people do start making changes before their pre surgery diet to get in their new mindset. They may drop some foods or swap out some to healthier options. Some have food funerals & will eat all their favourite foods before they start. It’s really up to you.

Mine all happened so quickly (we don’t have the hoops to go through in Australia like you do to get approval). So there was only a few weeks between getting my referral from my GP, seeing the surgeon, then the dietician then my actual surgery. Didn’t have a food funeral and had already cut out & back on some things because I had been trying to lose weight for a couple of months anyway.

No food funerals! Eat like you're going to be eating post-WLS and for the rest of your life.

Nope. Just follow the advice of your surgeon.

I agree 100%!

and also, you'll eventually be able to eat foods you're eating now. Once you're a ways out, there aren't any food restrictions. Although if you're meaning things like sugary treats, pizza, and chips - once you're able to eat those again, you'll have to only have them as an occasional treat, and most of the time eat nutritious foods in smaller portions than what you're used to. Otherwise, the weight will come back on.

Not if you didnt get told to by your team. Every Surgeon has his or her own opinion on this subject. Its different if you want to but I didnt. I had a few food funerals and nights out

I started changing my habits as soon as I called the surgery center, and I didn't have surgery for 7.5 months after that. I worked really hard and lost 50 lbs. HOWEVER... around month 6 I was getting to the point where if I lost any more weight I wouldn't qualify for surgery (Insurance required a BMI of 40), so I started throwing food funerals and eating all sorts of things. Then I followed the two week pre-op diet with no issues.

I don't regret changing my habits so early because the 50 lbs I lost are 50 lbs I don't have to lose now. Nor do I regret the food funerals. It helped me deal with the anxiety.

And, like others have said... you WILL be able to eat most things again, just not all the time. I've had pizza and sweets and chips, just not very many of these things and not very often.

I stuck to my 2 week 800 calorie a day pre-op diet religiously, only to have my surgery cancelled the day, no *the night* before, on the most spurious of pretexts. After that I was waiting for the results of various tests and thinking I might get the call any time, so I stuck to the diet until I got a second definite date, which was a full 2 months after my original date. Then it was right in to the 2 week proper pre-op diet again.

I ended up losing 25lbs in those 2 months and boy am I glad that I don't have those still ahead of me. So - I wouldn't change a thing. But you do you! We all approach WLS differently. Just don't do anything you'll regret. Once you're on the pre-op diet, do that.

I didn’t have any “food funerals” in the sense that i didn’t eat any more than i normally ate. But what i “normally” ate was probably equivalent to one big huge ongoing food funeral, lol.

Nor did i go out of my way to specifically eat “special” items.

I changed my eating habits on the first day of my 2 week pre-op diet, and went forward from there, that’s it.

I had a couple of food funerals and then did really good on the pre op diet. I was worried there were things I may never be able to eat again. At one year out though I can eat anything I ever did.

I changed my habits in the 6 months leading to surgery and lost 45lbs, but RIGHT before my pre-op diet started, I did have a little bit of a food funeral. Luckily, or unluckily depending on your POV, I can have pretty much anything I want - I just do it in moderation now.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
