March 2020 Surgery Folks Come On in!

Recommended Posts

Well I’m on Day 3 of the liquid diet and I have to say it hasn’t been bad, but today I noticed not a lot of energy. I’m assuming it’s the body adjusting. I thought I would try the Premier Protein clear ( to get ready for Clear Liquids for Sunday) in tropical punch flavor and I gotta say it’s definitely NOT my cup of tea (too much of an aftertaste) ....lol. I much prefer the regular premier Protein Drinks. March 2 is getting real close!
Our surgery date is right around the corner! I'm so excited! But yeah the clear Protein Drinks are yuck. Well I hope your energy levels get better. I'm actually the opposite i had more energy on this diet.

I've tried those, and I agree they have an aftertaste. One way I get those down is making them REALLY cold. I've frozen some in ice cube trays, so it doesn't thin out the drinks, and drank it from a double-wall bottle. Another option, to help "mask" that flavor is adding either sugar-free syrups or some crystal light powder.

Day 5 of liquid diet here, on Sunday I switch to all Clear Liquids. Went for pre-op testing yesterday, just waiting for the call today to see what time I go in on March 2. This is getting real! Excited but also apprehensive. Anybody else???

My program only requires "soft foods" two days before, and clear liquids the day before, but I have been doing 2 Protein Shakes a day and one meal on my own. I have my pre-op appointment on Monday! It's crazy how fast it is all going now. I have figured out my Vitamin regimen (2 Bariatric Advantage chewable Advanved Multi EA and 3 Bariatric Adv Calcium Chews), and finally found a plant based Protein I don't hate (purely inspired Organic Protein). I am intolerant to whey, so the majority of the regular ones are out for me. And there are soooooo many disgusting plant based ones.

I have also checked in with all of my favorite coaches with at my gym to make sure they are cool with me not following the daily format so I am good to go there too! I don't want to lose my gym habits. It's too easy to fall back into not going, lol. I am an OrangeTheory addict.

March 1st: I got my letter from the Bari Center with my official pre-op, surgery, and post-ops dates and instructions on medications/supplements not to take 7 days before surgery. I have all of the pre-op/post-op liquids and I know what I'm taking to the hospital with me.

Now starts the liquid diet for me and I expect to be hungry, hungry, hungry, but I will push thru!

Congrats, Mello1! Exciting for sure! I had same thoughts as you re: hunger on this pre-op. I’m on day 5 of it and can honestly say, as others have (that I admittedly thought ‘oh that won’t be me’)...that it really isn’t that bad. Each day gets easier and easier on it. I hope this will be your experience, too! You deserve an easy go of it for all of the schedule charting you’ve done for us. Thanks again, and only wonderful wishes!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
