What is the Norm?

Recommended Posts

I know everyone is different. But I would like to compare. I had RNY on Sept 24. I lost 9lbs the first week, 3.4lbs the 2nd week and 3.2lbs the 3rd week.

Someone I work with had RNY 6 days before me he lost 35lbs the first week. I haven't asked him what he has lost since. I don't want to get down on myself because of it. I know he was somewhere in the 350-400lb range. So of course he will lose more but what is the norm for everyone?

Is 3lbs a week average? So please everyone send me your stats.

You are doing fine,

I suggest stop comparing if it's making you feel down. You should be doing a happy dance. approximately 15+ pounds so far...When was the last time weight came off at this rate for you? It's fantastic.

Many charts and statistics everywhere, I'm sure someone will be post some for you on this thread. You are more than the charts and statistics. There is no norm. It's not how fast you lose weight it's the fact you are losing weight.

Congrats on your surgery

Everyone looses at different rates. For me it is around 0.4lb per day (it goes up an down a little). However my rate relates to the balance between my calories in vs calories out. I have calculated my BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) at around 2200 calories per day. There are plenty of calculators online which will give you this number. I am consuming an average of 865 calories per day. In order to loose or gain 1 lb you need a deficit or surplus of 3500 calories (more or less). Therefore I have a 1335 caloric deficit which calculates out to a loss of 0.38 lb per day (1335/3500) which is +/- 10% generally of my results. That's not to say even with the same logic you will see consistent results, this just works for me and I have seen plenty of cases where these relationships don't seem to work in other people. My suggestion is to closely track your food intake, and keep a diary like myfitnesspal and once you find an approach and meal plan which works, keep doing that. You will loose at your own rate. There is no real magic too it. Generally speaking the less you eat and the more you burn, the more you will loose. At the end of the day all the surgery does for you is give you the superpower of eating less, the rest is up to you.

Comparing yourself to another WLS patient is about as accurate as comparing a Car to a Building. 2 very VERY different things. You could have 2 twins, having the exact same starting weight, surgery, surgeon, etc etc etc etc and they would still lose at different rates.

Focus on you, not on others. There is no one else out there that is going to lose the way you do. No one.

Not trying to be mean or make you feel bad...but if everyone sent you their stats I think it would make you feel really sad or depressed. Like Matt Z said it's like comparing a car to a building, we are all made up so differently and have different situations such as age, male, female, medical conditions etc. Please just stick to the plan and and the weight will come off and you will feel healthy and happy.

The best encouraging stories that I have read on these forums are from the ones that are 12 plus months and further post-op who has lost steady and slow and are keeping it off.

No one here is trying to discourage you, we know if you just focus on the number you will set yourself up for disappointment.

You have a great tool so use it to your advantage and live your best life one day at a time.

I wish you all the best in your journey 😉

And you're making your own kind of music , marching on your own trail toward your goal weight. I could tell you how much I have lost since my surgery on September 5th, and you might sniff a little, say that's not fair! But if you see any of my other posting where I say the amount, keep in mind. I am not uncomplicated a path, I am losing so much because I have a stoma stricture, no purees or solids get through, once that gets fixed my precipitous weight descent will level out and I'll be more realistic. Don't woryy, that's your surgeon and bariatric teams problem, let them guide you, they know your case better than we do. We will cheer with you when you reach your goals, promise!😛

Who's Norm and why would you want to be him? I prefer being Norma or Sybil or whoever. This Norm bloke is very overrated.

I think he may a brother-in-law of Average Joe. I believe they may be in the same family. And I agree, Norm has a lot of P.R. but no substance.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
