Hi all I'm having my revision lap band to bypass on Monday Oct 22..I was just wondering if anyone has gone thru this process and how your surgery went. Also was wondering if anyone has any advice....I'm on day 6 of pre op diet and I'm down 12 lbs already.

I'm a recent Band to RNY. My revision was performed on the 21st of March. Very happy with the change!

No real advice, you've been through the surgery before, so this time around it's really not any different, they used the same incision points for my revision, so no new scars, recovery wasn't much different than it was with the band as far as pain and mobility. Surgery was longer, and recovery in hospital was a few extra days, but all in all, it wasn't different enough from the band installation in many regards.

If you've got any specific questions, please make sure to hit the quote button so I get alerted to your reply, or you can send me a private message and we can chat there.

Congrats and good luck!

I’m having my revision surgery on 11/07 and glad to read Matt’s post. My lap band recovery was easy so I’ll take that, and I’m only scheduled for a one-night stay. Would love to stay in touch and hear how you progress. And congrats on the weight loss!

I just downloaded the IPad app and do not have a quote button (and can’t rotate my page view, argh). Will need to troubleshoot.

I’m hoping to be doing the same soon. Have an appointment with my surgeon on 29/10 when I should be given a date

The apps are wonky, best experience is to use the actual website itself.

I had my gastric band put in in 2009 and lost 41 kg (90 lbs) over about 18 months. I then had abdominoplasty in 2012 to get rid of 5 more kg (11 lbs) of skin. Once the surgeon took the Fluid out of the band for surgery it was stuffed! I could never get just the right amount of fluid in - 3.5 ml and I couldn't swallow even Water, 3.25 ml and I was starving. As a result I ended up gaining back 32 kg slowly over the last 6 years. I finally got fed up of feeling tired and fat and in pain all the time with bad knees, so asked my bariatric surgeon what we could do about it. He suggested revision to RNY, and I trust him implicitly, so said ok.

I had my band removed on July 17th and it was alright. I was only in overnight and like Matt he used the same incision points as my original surgery so no new scars (not that anyone looks at my belly anyway :) ). I did have a lot of post op shoulder tip pain, but that went away very quickly. I'm also very allergic to any kind of tape and developed a terrible blistered rash under the OpSite he used over the incisions. The only other downside was that I was able to eat anything I wanted and in large portions. I gained another 6 kg before my RNY on 26 September.

The RNY surgery was super easy. I was admitted at 6:30 am, taken to the OR at 7:30 and back in my room and wide awake at noon. I asked the nurse doing my obs if I could get up to go to the toilet and she said I could so I took myself for a walk around the ward before getting back into bed. I had absolutely no pain with any part of the surgery. He used Dermabond glue instead of bandages or Steri-Strips and it's pretty much all fallen off now. I think the worst part was having the drain removed 2 days post op. I was only in hospital for 2 nights, which suited me fine. I think people recover better at home where they can lie in their own bed, not be woken up every 2 hours for someone to check blood pressure and such.

I did go home with a terrible head cold (that I think my partner gave me) and developed shingles on the side of my face and up my nose, but honestly I'm sure that was a side effect of my body having to try to heal itself from the surgery and then the head/chest cold on top. I'm now 3 weeks out from the RNY and could not be more happy with my decision. I'm down 2 dress sizes and the pain in my knees is so much better.

Thanks for that. Glad to hear things went pretty smoothly. My surgeon uses a 1 step process for band removal and revision unless there are major issues.

As for the tape allergy , I know all about that

I had my band for 6 years. It was a very rocky road. I had my band removed in May of 2018 and my RNY on 09/24/2018. It has been a wonderful experience so far. I can feel that I am full. I am loosing weight. I'm still on pureed food and my next stage starts 10/29 and I will be on soft foods.

Looking forward to that more normal feeling full rather than the horrible stuck in the throat feeling

It's a whole different feeling trust me. But when you're full you know you're full.

I had my band put in during 2009. Like you, when they emptied it (in my case to ready me for chemo) afterwards I never again found that sweet spot. I had lost 40kg, and saw 25 creep on over 5 years.

So last December I took the plunge and had an RNY. I so wish I had done it at the start! The surgery, if it is keyhole, is similar. I had band out and RNY at the same time, and recovery, eating, drinking - a breeze.

But - it has been so much easier for me to make the RNY ‘work’ for me than it ever was for the band! And now I am over 45kg down from RNY surgery weight - about 60kg down from my highest weight. Now I weigh 61kg, I am running and scuba diving and I now cook, and it is fabulous low-carb, healthy and supremely tasty food - I am a new woman!

It is a great transition. I wish you as smooth a journey as I had!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
