Welcome to the boards. You just have to jump right in as you have in this post! And post often. People get to know you and then it becomes like a fam.
So here's the deal. Glad you've had an epiphany, but I know you know this isn't magic bean surgery. Right? The operation will make your tummy smaller. That's all it does. So if you have a food/eating problem, please know that you may need even more help to keep the weight off. You may need therapy or OA, or some kind of help for your mind on top of your anatomy.
Cuz people eat around the sleeves and pouches all the time. They still make the wrong choices despite the nutrition education and the surgery. And it becomes a shambolic event.
The time to get that extra help is now, even before your surgery, or in the early months after surgery so that you don't squander the honeymoon period and instead use that time to revise your relationship with food for the future!
Sorry to be blunt. But it always alarms me to read these words that I highlighted. There is no black/white all or nothing future for us, sadly. [emoji20] We will always have to be hyper aware in my opinion to guard against that silent enemy that lies like nothing else.

Don’t all of us have an eating disorder. If you have been guilty of yo-yo ing (which I have awards in) lol, then I think it’s not really the food it’s what we want to stuff down emotionally is the cycle we can’t break on our own. Any thoughts ?

Not sure if I would necessarily agree with this? A large majority of my weight came one because of medical reasons (sever HG in pregnancy resulting in a post pregnancy rapid gain). I am not an emotional eater, nor do I have certain foods that I binge on. My issue is I don't have a metabolism, stemming from the HG. You have to vigoriously PRY the weight from my body because it does not want to lose! And even then, I lose weight incredibly slowly. The other issue, which I will admit is totally on me is that I tend to not make eating multiple meals a priority. I could go the entire day with nothing but an obscene amount of coffee and a banana, then going home and eat a larger dinner. So not sure I'd call that an eating disorder? I have since changed my ways and feel GREAT... annnd have lost next to nothing LOL.

Oh yeah I totally understand that! It helps that my insurance made me see a weight loss specialist for 6 months first before they would even think about approving my surgery. Eating is the #1 thing we have worked on! I know this surgery isn’t a “magic pill” but it does help with putting you in the right direction.

100% agree with this! :D

I would call you an outlier then. :)

But. LOL. There are so many of us with our heads so farrrrrrr up the river De-Nile (not meaning you), that they would swear to the their doc they got super morbidly obese by eating nothing except a chicken breast and broccoli at night...

So there is that part.

I raise my hand heartily to admitting I'm a big ol' sinner with food issues! (And Daddy issues. ;) ) (Mostly food issues though...haha)

LOL... Well I would own up to my intense addiction to coffee. I'm still having jealousy issues of my coworkers enjoying their fully caffeinated afternoon coffee while I sip my Decaf (which I used to scoff at, because whats the point of decaf?). But food? Meh. Don't get me wrong, I love to cook. Making homemade Pasta was one of my favorite things to do with my kids. With the whole "Gluten sensitivity" I've got going on I've had to switch things up a bit. But when I'm emotional, or stressed, or upset... I make myself a cup of coffee. And if I'm feeling really peeved, I make myself a fancy coffee.

So just had my pre-op appointment. So bummed...he said no to caffeine and adding things like crystal light to Water. Also, no sugar free Jello, broth, etc. I appreciate all of the suggestions....I was really hoping he would add something besides 3 Protein Shakes, 64 oz of water and 3 oz cooked Protein meat and 1 cup of steamed veggies. I am so hungry. He said the hunger will pass. 😥

Well that’s a bummer! I seem to be on the same diet as you. But they say yes to sugar free jello, crystal light, broth, sugar free popsicles.

The hunger will pass....but it unfortunately comes back. You just have to be strong and think about the positive outcome from it!

Does it have to be like a Premier Protein shake? Or can you fancy up your shake? I make a delicious shake in the am using fat free greek yogurt, Unsweetened almond milk, and vanilla cupcake Protein Powder with mixed in frozen blueberries... throw it in my ninja and make a yummy smoothie. Packs a great amount of Protein and other nutrients and I love it. My kids love it.

So I joined this Bariatric Pals Community thinking that it would be awesome to talk and fellow people that are going through the same thing as me. But for some reason I find it hard to join in on the conversations. I feel like I’m butting in on other peoples conversations. Like who’s this newbie trying to talk to us? Does anyone else feel that way? Or is it just me? Because Im definitely not that way in person. I’m always talking to everyone around me no matter who it is. But for some reason I feel differently on this.

Im from NYC my surgery is the 10th so we are close in date. Fell free to contact me anytime Im married with four children FYI lol. I get what you mean but you can just post your question like you just did and then you might not feel like ur butting in. Can you give me advice on not having saggy skin its totally scaring me my arms especially.

Good luck on your surgery!!!

LOL! Well I know I do! :) But yes I believe it's also the food that we're addicted to because we chase the high we get from dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin. All feel good mood elevators that we get as a result of eating some of our favorite coma-nervana-inducing foods.

I would die. LOL. I am literally the crabbiest person ever if I am awake at 11. I'm kind of like a lay down at 8:30 and read, passed out by 9:30 kind of gal. In fairness, my alarm goes off at 5am. But still. Love me some sleep.

Although on the weekends when I'm feeling rebellious, I'll stay awake until 11 or maybe 12. #LivinOnTheEdge

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
