So i am right in the middle of getting my requirements done (NUT, Psych, classes etc) and i am still undecided if i want to go with the sleeve or the by pass.

So my question to the community at large is; if given the opportunity would you change the type of procedure you had and why?

Im curious what people think, both those that are just now post op and those who are years out and everyone in between.

Thanks in advance everyone.

Just had my one year anniversary, and no, nothing I would change. The restriction I get with my sleeve is more than enough, and with some foods I still struggle to eat much without filling up too quickly (and feeling miserable). I liked the idea of the sleeve because it required less worry/fuss with Vitamins and I was also a problem child with Portion Control. If I was a sweet tooth junky I likely would have opted for the bypass instead.

I also went with the sleeve because it was supposed to be less invasive. Then I ended up having some complications anyway so I guess in the end it didn't matter much...lol. Point is that in the end that was something I was really concerned about initially and then realized that it shouldn't have played into my decision as much as I thought.

I have sleeve 3 years 8 months out. I wouldn't change my choice to have surgery. I don't think it would matter to me wich type I had. I am beyond happy the weight is gone and I have my healthy back.

My Dr. suggested sleeve because I'm a type one diabetic. When I have low blood sugar, I can still use my glucose pills With the sleeve you don't get dumping syndrome when you ingest sugar. I also liked that they do not reroute your intestines.

I am maintaining. It's still as much work as any other surgery. I have to eat healthy and exercise.

I had RnY - but I do wish I had considered the sleeve more seriously. I honestly would have still gone with the RnY because of pre-existing issues with GERD though. I had a very high starting weight and a terrible sweet tooth/binge eating. So, I didn't even consider the sleeve - I figured I had to have the restriction AND the "get sick if you eat sugar" to be successful. Well, that backfired because it turns out only a percentage of RnY patients experience dumping syndrome and I'm not one of them (didn't know this until after surgery). So I can still eat practically anything and not get sick. Had I known before surgery that I would be the one that doesn't get sick from sugar I would have probably weighed my options more closely.

Interesting, I didn't know that either, thank you.

Thanks, im really torn, my goal is about 85% of my excess weight, which traditional wisdom says go for the By-pass, but the idea of having my intestines moved around and the additional potential for risk doesn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy. I have type 2 diabetes, again traditional wisdom says by-pass but i have been reading some medical studies recently that were published on the JAMA network that show at 5 years there is actually very little difference between the sleeve and by-pass on diabetes, even weight loss at 5 years was only slightly different (just a little in favor of the by-pass for more lost).

sooo torn.

That is very good to hear, one of my concerns was the whole restriction issue, would the sleeve not give me enough. One of my concerns is that im always just feeling hungry. I do have a sweet tooth but it is something i can keep control of.

It is a hard choice. I understand why you feel torn. Think down the road of what is going to make you successful long term.

Head hunger is a real struggle even after surgery. For instance I can eat right before I leave work (and feel full), then get home an hour later and feel like I need to eat because I'm hungry. But...that's due to old/bad habits of always eating something as soon as I got home and sitting down for a few minutes to unwind from the day.

Bare in mind different foods will make you feel fuller than others. I could a cup of cottage cheese and some fruit and not have any full sensation. However a cup of chicken and some greens would leave me feeling really full. My typical lunch is a salad, so about a cup or so of lettuce and some canned tuna. I'm stuffed from that. The thing my office always warned us about was grazing and giving in to head hunger. In the early months I had no choice but to eat 5-6 meals a day to get my Protein in. Now I can do that in 3 meals and a Protein Shake no problem (some days no shake at all). Head hunger is something I'm always going to battle, so no matter how small our stomach may be it's the mental battle that is the real struggle.

I honestly think it depends on your set of circumstances. I am a T2 diabetic so every one of my healthcare providers strongly encouraged RNY because of the well-documented effect of curing the diabetes. This is what made the decision really easy - I want to have the surgery best suited to end the malady of diabetes. T2 is a misery that I just want gone. I was also concerned about GERD from the sleeve and I do not want to potentially have to do a revision surgery. Going through one of these is enough.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
