Hi everyone! I am a “newbie” here, and I’m also new to the *Wonderful World of Weight-loss Surgery*. I started my process in November, my insurance requires a consecutive 6 month physician supervised diet,my appointment next week will make month 3 for me(halfway mark yay!!). This is my first time making a post, I mostly get on here to just read research, but I noticed that everyone is either post-op, or already on the liquid diet, so I’m looking for people to connect with that are currently still going through the process before approval like me...a little about myself: My name is Jaz I am 25yrs old.
MY STATS:
Height: 5”6
CW: 243(give or take)
HW: 250
GW: 140
BMI:39

Hi Jaz i have my 3rd appointment of 6 next week so I’m in about the same spot as u! I plan of getting surgery in may or early June! Good luck to you!

I have my first psych appointment coming up on the 30th. My insurance requires an intake appointment though, so I assume not much will happen at that one. I know some people have said that they only had to have one appointment, and some had to go back a few times..I guess it just depends on your insurance and the practice *shrugs*.

It has definitely been a process. There are so many requirements and tests..and the 6 month wait kind of sucks, but it has given me a lot of time to research, and make up in my mind that I am certain about having surgery and am going to do it. I’m almost done with my LONG list of things.lol. All I have left is the sleep study(which is next week),the psych eval, cardiac clearance(only good for a month so I have to wait until April for that),and the last 3 appointments of the 6.

When I had mine, it was basic questions about yourself. Most was how weight has affected your life and what you will do yo change. There was supposed to be 2 sessions, but I was early to the appointment and her next appointment wasn't for a while, so we did both sessions in 1.

So I have 1 nutrition and 1 Dr appointment left. Just had my endoscope and found out I have an esophogial ulcer and GERD. Seriously had no idea! So I'm waiting to see if that affects the surgery. Last time I was told if I had acid reflux they like to do the bypass since it usually cures it. On a side note, thanks for the encouragement! I'm down 7 pounds from my appointment just over a week ago. On the right path. I can make the required 10-20 pounds.

It definitely makes you get organized with all these appointments and stuff but it’s not too bad! I’ve done my psych eval and all i needed for clearance was an ekg which was fine! So after the next 3 months i should be good to go besides the 2000 dollar down payment my insurance requires [emoji31]

I am going to have my surgery hopefully around June or July. I'm scheduled for my sleep study in February. I've already had my psych equal. I can't wait

Hey. I've scheduled my surgery for May 14th. Im from Canada and the wait to even get on the wait list is too hard so I've decided to go to Mexico to a centre that a old friend of mine had gone to. I don't have insurance that covers the cost but hoping to get seomthing back from our provincial coverage like I've seen someone else get. Now since I don't have to go through insurance I don to have all th same appointments that you guys do but my doctor is completely on board with me getting this surgery and has set up a plan with me to make sure we keep on top of my levels to lessen the risk of malnutrition. I'd love to have contact with people who are on the same time line as me.

I have worries like everyone else and some of the research also has started making me second guess my decision to get it done, but I want to th success that others have had to make my life healthier and better.

Yes, I am definitely more organized too.lol. I’m also a little more on the shy, soft spoken side of life, but going to all of these appointments seeing all of these doctors it’s kind of forced me out of my shell.lol. It’s surprising how many of the doctors and nurses that Ive had to see in this are so interested and supportive of having the surgery though. It’s been very encouraging...yikes $2000??

Yea, I have a steep payment on my part too. My endoscope was $400. The surgery will cost me 15% and I'm told it will cost between 15,000 and 20,000. So I'm trying to save up.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
