Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty

Recommended Posts

I have a surgery date! Or should I say "Procedure" date, since it is non-surgical. My ESG is scheduled for September 8th. My insurance has approved it and I'm so excited!!

Any info on expectations or certain foods/drinks that you all have are appreciated!

Yes, they're paying 90% and I pay 10%. I'm having it done at U of Chicago and it's a $10,000 (all-inclusive) procedure. My Doctor said there won't be any additional fees for anesthesia or meds or anything else as long as there aren't any complications.

EW, where do you buy that from?? I'm going to try the Premier Protein ones from Sam's Club and see how they taste. I have a friend that swears by those. Any other helpful foods or tips? I did buy some 3-compartment meal trays to pre-package my weighed meals OneRx I'm on regular foods. That way on Sunday's I can weigh everything out and count my calories.

CONGRATS!!! Hang on you are going for one heck of a journey!!! One thing I would suggest don't buy a lot of any thing Protein Drinks because most people's taste change. I would really hate to know how much $$I spent on Protein drinks I'm sure it was lots of dollars!! Luckily, my nephew is into healthy drinking and eating!! At least it wasn't wasted!! Again YAY YAY!!!

Thanks Shedo! And good to know! I wish that I would've read this before I went shopping yesterday, lol. I went to Sam's Club and bought the chocolate and vanilla Protein drinks there. They're 30 grams of protein.

Do any of you have any info like paperwork that describes examples of meal ideas for the first few days and beyond? I would love to see it if possible. I can give you my email or you can text it to me if that's easier.

Shedo - Yes it is fairly new. And only being done in a handful of clinics in our country. It is being taught to physicians more and more, so it will become as common as the other gastric surgeries very quickly.
What really entices me is that it is outpatient, only takes about 45 mins, less invasive and you don't have to go through the multiple pre-op specialist appointments like you do with the more invasive gastric surgeries.

Thank you! My daughter is overweight and has a full-time job and 4 kids. This might be just what she needs. Please keep me posted on this. Also, did you mean the US? Thank you again.

Yes, it is non-surgical and all done through your mouth, like when you go in for an upper GI. I'm having it on a Friday and hope to be working on Monday.

Yes, I'm in the US. I'm having mine done in Chicago.

This is very exciting to have discovered a thread of others having done this procedure or those that have it scheduled. So hard to find info about this online!! I have mine scheduled for September 28 2pm at UCI (university of California Irvine). I have three kids and have struggled to drop the baby weight after the third baby. My BMI is about 31. I've tried every thing to lose the weight and it just keeps coming back. I'm so excited for this procedure AND nervous and would love to connect via email or better yet on the phone with anyone that has already had the procedure done and would be willing to talk! Belle3

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
