Hi my op is booked for may 8th. Feeling very lonely as I have just moved to my husbands town and don't really know anyone. This journey is very scary when you can't sit down with a girlfriend and talk about it as much as I love my husband he is a great support but sometimes you just need another girl. Anyway wishing everyone luck I really can't wait to start living my life again. X

We are all here with you. Any time.

Hey Trish,

How was your first day with the full liquid diet? I'm living vicariously through you because mine start next Tuesday and I'm curious did you get results yet or is it too early? 😀

Hey Sweet, my preop diet doesn't start till May 4th. I only have one week of low calorie and high Protein diet and 1 day of liquid diet before surgery.

My blood results came back. My potassium was lower but still little out of range. I am supposed to see my primary on Monday to see if he can put me on some meds to help control my levels. Right now I am just taking one day at a time. They will do my blood work right before surgery and if my levels are not in control they will postpone.

I am hoping my primary will give me something to help. Thank you for thinking ok me [emoji4].

How are you doing on your journey?

Hey guys! Sorry I haven't been on in a little while. First thing. About a Facebook group. I found one that has already been created and I have joined it. So far it seems pretty good! It's called "April/May '17 Sleeve support group". It should come up in search. If not, I can try to link it here in another post!

TTrisha, I'm so sorry to hear about your potassium issues. I hope it gets resolved soon! Guess what? Just now prior to surgery again they've found another issue with me that might mean I have to cancel surgery again! Last time it was uncontrolled diabetes. This time I might have Cushings! My cortisol levels have been testing through the roof! But I am still waiting on confirmatory results and another analysis by my endocrinologist. They did a CT scan though and my left adrenal gland is nodular (meaning it has lots of tiny tumors on it). She still thinks that I might not have Cushings though. I don't know how she thinks that at this point though given I do have the adrenal tumors and the high cortisol. I'm praying I can go ahead with surgery.

Sweet, you asked me how my diabetes is now. Well, it is much better than it was but still not where I need to be. However, my blood sugars and A1C results are at an acceptable level for surgery to occur. I had a lot of side effects from using the insulin, so we are trying to control it with a max dose of Metformin and Glipizide twice daily. I am also doing a ketogenic diet which is very good for diabetics, especially at helping reverse it. The surgery was my next step so I can reduce weight and hopefully get rid of it. Though if I have Cushings, my diabetes might be partially caused by that and would explain why it's been hard to control.

Hope you all are doing well and hope you guys join the Facebook group! It says it's for people having surgery from April 15th 2017 to May 15th 2017, but I don't think there's be any issue with any May sleevers who are having surgery towards the end of May!

Nico

I just was wondering does anybody not have to do the liquid diet before surgery. I went to my pre-op testing today, and they said once they got everything back and its normal they would medically clear me for surgery. After that I just have to go to a nutrition class, but I don't have a do any liquid diet, is that normal.

I don't have one. Every program/surgeon is different I think. I'm trying to figure out what to do, because it wasn't required, but my surgeon did say it's recommended. But he only said to eat lean meats and liquids. That's not really much to go on, lol.

I don't have to do liquid, but I do have to do a low cal, low fat, low carb diet for 2 weeks with Protein Shakes (under 800 calories/day). I start this coming Tuesday and honestly can't wait! I'm sure I'll think different a few days in. [emoji6]

Everything o.k. I got lots of pre-op appointments within the next two weeks before my surgery. I guess to meet the team and getting the paperwork out the way. It's exciting.

Nico, I am sorry to hear about all the issues you are having. I am diabetic too and can understand how frustrating it can be when you are trying to do the right thing for your health and have obstacles.

Please keep us posted and I will join the Facebook page. See you there.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
