Got confused today re eating bugles ....

Recommended Posts

(So the OP is not from the Divided States of America. She truly did NOT know what bugles were.)

I guess the same way an American would be confused by someone from England saying they ate a "spotted d**k" by sucking on it to make it mushy...........Hey wait a minute. It isn't as suggestive with a bugle snack.< /p>

Really BariatricPal? Spotted d i c k is a real dessert.

I guess we can't use the word "dick.

As in:

Dick Tracy

Dick Van Dyke

Dick Cheney

Dick's Sporting Goods

Dick Cavett

Dick and Jane

etc.

To the people saying they are blocking newbies shame on you! Why be in a support group if youre here to shame people. End of discussion. Time to move on.

No, not "end of discussion". I didn't say I was going to block newbies, I said I was going to block newbies and ANYONE who comes in guns blazing and name calling. I am here to support people, not to watch someone give good advice and be called an a-hole for doing so.

I understand what you said it was someone else... He specifically said I'm blocking all newbies.

I wouldn't get near ANYONE's Pusst.

I guess the spelling is somewhat correct. I have seen them with a string hanging out. I guess it was attached to a tea bag? Or was it for flossing afterwards?

:P

Same here... I never saw the post from the newbie, this post wasn't about a newbies question. But rather about the OP observation of how a bugle if it was spelled correctly, would be on the diet plan. And then her following thought processes as she was unfamiliar with the snack food Bugles.

It was hilarious until it was sidetracked by people saying it was rude and mean etc. I am thinking to myself, how in the world is this mean and rude? Then someone comes along and has to knock our building blocks over and link this thread to another thread.

People If we can't laugh at the mundane and inane we create a generation of people that are requiring "safe spaces". Oh wait to late. The only safe space is the play pen at your Mama's, if you can't handle the real world, go back to that while those of us that have figured out how to survive in a "mean" world continue to get the joke about words and the hilarity that the lack of knowledge can cause.

Wow, I find this post to be incredibly rude. I did see the original post and Miss Impala's reply matters because it is factually correct. It isn't coloured and skewed by an emotional response to the original post as some of the others.

I'm puzzled by your reluctance to accept the reality that there are people on these boards who are not from the US and therefore will be puzzled by some of the local idiosyncrasies. Many people across the globe view Americans as insular and ignorant of things that go on beyond their borders, I don't believe that to be true as I love and work with Americans every day. Unfortunately these kinds of responses only play into that stereotype. Frankly it looks like "rightfighting" to me.

The OP was pretty clear multiple times in this thread that she did not know what bugles are. At first read I was puzzled by what the post was until I of course quickly realized she was Australian and they likely don't have bugles there. I get that some people are slower on the uptick but after several people having explained it I'm not sure where the confusion lies. the thread then veered off, but not the OP's doing or intent of the post. (the spotted d*ick posts won, though IMO).

I'm not even talking about the OP; I totally understand she didn't know what Bugles are. It's just the others who do know and still choose to be jerks... those are the ones that get to me. Not everyone was raised to have compassion on others, apparently.

I read it all. It's fine everyone needs something to laugh at. I apologized this am. If people are still making fun of me it's fine... I had a really bad day yesterday if it brings humor, name-calling so be it. I learned a lot from it all. It is supposed to be supportive I agree.

I apologize, I did not realize you were not talking about the OP, I assumed you were because you did not acknowledge the misinterpretation by some (who even called her a bully). My mistake. I still think telling someone their reply doesn't matter is a bit rude. But I am Canadian, so perhaps overly polite in a global context? ;)

Yes, people asked me here what are "Cruskits" or "Snicker Pods", how about "cough lollies" ....

Anyway, before this gets even more out of context and proportion,

Here is a photo of my local Woolworths chips aisle:

Another entertaining read!

This post has it all: people rudely proclaiming how rude others are, folks who rudely exclaim "end of discussion!" as though it were up to them, insulting vets who know more about this process than any of us, and rudely making assumptions/proclamations that "everyone" ate prohibited foods during pre/post op and if we don't admit to it - we're in denial.

I actually followed my surgeon's plan. To. The. Letter. I can eat whatever I want at this stage, but I still haven't had 1 bite of junk food. I'm sure I will eventually, but I have goals and they're just more important to me at this point than anything with starchy carbs.

I'm far from a vet, but I'm already coming around less and less because of the reasons above. Every few days, for entertainment, I like to read the rants and raves.

I only joined the forum after surgery. In preop, I found all the information I could have asked for without having to ask for it. I wanted to join to share my experiences and ask for help is anything came up. Before I joined, I just searched and read the threads with helpful advice. Now that I can see the many (thousands) of posts looking for validation for bad behaviour. Even going so far (as one user here did) to accuse everyone else of the same, or lying about it - all in a desperate attempt to feel okay about it.

It was mentioned above that there is a good reason so many vets have wandered off the site, never to return.

I found this very humorous. Personally being fat most of my life I've developed a thick skin. A newbie myself 10 weeks post and although very informed from surgeon and 6 weekly classes. I eat carbs. If it's on my list. Sugar drips when I don't eat enough carbs. I'm not clueless but total carbs, net carbs, good vs bad carbs, simple and complex do get a bit confusing. Glad to have info and support from others. Am I going to have pie or chocolate cake at a gathering no. Not 2 weeks out either. Even if I wanted crunchy I'd be scared it would cut my insides. I did eat the cheese and sauce off a piece of pizza. Sauce that's carbs right??? Oh confused on which kind again....

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
