Too bad there arent studies on the people that researched extensively preop vs those that walked through it blindly and their weightloss stats 5 years out.

I would be very interested in this.

Few studies yet but plenty of raw data showing that patients who get pre op education are half as likely to regain more than half their weight loss at five years. I can't believe that Medicare pays for WLS but not for comprehensive pre op preparation.

Oh, and while I'm here I was wondering when you people started to drink beer again. I'm 3 weeks out and could really go for a cold one...

I.hope your joking about beer. I'm heading to Germany Wednesday but know beer has no future in my diet ever again and should not be in any bariatric patient.

Says who? I'm over 3.5 years out and maintaining beautifully. My restriction is super tight to this day. I drink a beer or two on the weekends easily and without issues.

Wait until you are ready to stop losing and to start regaining weight.

Well, that would mean no Protein drinks, no coffee with Creamer, no milk...

I "struggle" with carbs. (Well, not really, I just avoid them.) A few beers a week won't kill me, though. I'm fairly certain I'm not the minority. Most vets I know drink wine, beer or mixed drinks occasionally and are still successful. My surgeon ok'd it once I hit maintenance so I'm fairly certain I'll be fine. :)

I'm so far out I no longer take meds, but if yours say to abstain, you absolutely should!!

Struggling with carbs means (to me) knowing that i cannot ever yield to the temptation and expect to have a reasonable response to having ingested a portion. The surgery did not provide any easier way to manage one potatoe chip or one quarter cup halo top icecream. The struggle for me means if i buy the halo top pint and eat the first spoonful, i will not beable to stop until i have ckeared the whole pint. If i wouls drink one beer, i would obsess about the other five. If i allow one banana, i would not beable to contain the carb cravings that follow. When it comes to simple carbs i simply am never satisfied. If surgery was supposed to have accomplished yhat, then mibe failed

Nope, it didn't fail. You had surgery on your stomach, not your mind.

I'd definitely say you MORE than "struggle" with carbs by what you describe, and I agree. You should abstain all together.

Have you considered seeking support from a counselor or a support group like OA to figure out why you can't stop?

Lipstick lady...yup. so far im told bacterial overbloom in gut, poor absorption of what i do eat and that everything i am eating is the right food for me. Im told to eat more fermented food and get more magnesium. Am on methylated B12 , 10k Vitamin D, 7keto DHEA, ultrazyme, prebiotics, Probiotics, and stuff i havent started yet.i spent 18 days in israel, ate out everyday snd lost 2 lbs. Living alone doesn't help. I did better on vacation than here. And i still battle with a slice of bread (which ive not touchedsince 2011. My friends attacked foccacia bread and oil in front of me and i didn't even feel jealous. Couldn't even finish my meal. But now, a week later, i find myself thinking back to that scene and boy do i taste that bread.. wonder if EMDR will workbfir carbs like it does for trauma

I am not a big fan of support groups myself. OA is the exception because the meetings are orderly and people are kind to each other. Only the newbies interrupt and explain why YOU are doing it "wronge".

I imagine it would be hard to track in a group if you needs a sign interpreter. They do have on line meetings.

I love the snarky vets and hope they stick around....and it is true that people are asking the same questions over and over and over again. It happens - that's the nature of a forum. I've been on them since the early 90's and they haven't changed (I used to take such abuse on AOL when I was a moderator on it for a company I worked for). I've only been on this site a few months and am just now starting to venture away from the Pre-Op/Post-Op forums into the other areas. I didn't even know there was a Rants/Raves section...I like it tho...I need to see what else I've been missing...and learn a few things too...carry on...

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
