I'm a little confused, I went to my family doctor recently to talk about gastric sleeve. She agreed that she liked the research i had put in to it and refereed me to the Ontario Baratric network. After some ups and downs i finally got an orientation date Nov 30th. I got my info package in the mail today and it says "thank you for contacting us about gastric bypass sugrey" Someone else on this website said they just dont do sleeves in Toronto. Now i really much rather not have to pay for sleeve operation, but all my research has been there. for some reason bypass scares me even more then a sleeve.

has anyone else gone though this? has anyone convinced them to do a sleeve anyways?

Kinda sad and confused...

It's not quite the same situation, but I had to sign a waiver before surgery saying that I understood that when they opened me up and for whatever reason determined that medically I had to have a sleeve over RNY it would be okay. I actually think this is quite common whichever procedure you choose upfront. If I had woken up and found out that I'd been given the sleeve, I would have been equally happy.

However if they won't do the sleeve in your case, and you are dead set against the RNY, than maybe self pay is an option for you. Just remember that you might have to sign the same kind of waiver I did. I actually think it's pretty common nowadays.

Understandable. You should definitely stick to whatever you feel the most comfortable with, there's no right or wrong whichever way you go. ????

If I couldn't get sleeved I'd do bypass! There's not too many differences. Many on this site have had Bypass!

RNY really does have better data that supports long term weight lose.

now im more confused then ever, some how RNY seems more invasive, with more consequences... Ill just have to start my research all over again. I feel so uncertain.

I know many people state that the RNY is to invasive for them but...even tho they reroute our pouch etc think about the Sleeve they are removing your stomach like 85 to 90%. Thar is pretty invasive if you ask me. Also if you have GERD the Sleeve tends to make it worse. I do know some have to be revised to the RNY. Also I see that your weight is 245 right, my STATS are: Highest weight 249#'s Surgery weight 232 Current weight 125#'s. I went below my goal weight because of Strictures ( kind of like scar tissue) I got down to 117#'s and both my PCP and my Suregon were worried that I was losing muscle instead of the fat. I managed to gain 8#'s and it is amazing how healthy I feel!! I did get to my goal weight in 6 months and have managed to maintain at 125#'s. Just check out your options. It also depends on your diet if you love carbs sugar etc the RNY gives you restriction and the malobsorbsion too. Which means you don't absorb as many calories. Like I said do your research because noone can decide which is best for you.

Hi Stefanie, I'm in toronto too. I'm going to Montreal for a revision (self-pay). I looked into both. Like others have said. Bypass is the proven gold standard, so should not be something to be too concerned about. I'm the opposite of you. I've been told they may not be able to do a bypass because of scar tissue and my have to do a sleeve. I won't know until I have woken up which I got.

I love carbs, i could just sit and eat chips or a french stick (dont even need the butter)... I do enjoy sweets too...so maybe this will be more likely to help! back to the research board i guess!
