Questions about your forever diet after surgery

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering how people maintain their loss long term. Are you able to eat everything you did before but now in moderation thanks to the bypass, or have you completely changed your diet by cutting out things like simple carbs etc? Some combination of the two?

Also, I know sweets can be a problem after bypass, but what about spicy foods?

This is my approach during the maintenance phase. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf

I do not have a problem with spicy foods but normally I do not eat too much spicy.

I am nearly 2 years post op and maintaining. My diet has changed significantly for the better however I still eat some of the things I love just in moderation.

There are things that I simply wont touch like any fast food crap of any kind. Any processed food of any kind. I make 99% of my meals at home and if I dont, I am careful about where I eat and what I choose to eat. I prefer good quality Protein, veggies and fruit because this is the food that keeps me full longer.

On occasion I will eat rice or Pasta but will usually choose a whole wheat or whole grain option instead of what I used to eat.

If I do eat bread I also prefer a whole grain bread although I do occasionally eat a simple piece of bread. If I do too much of this sort of thing I tend to get hypoglycemia so I am careful.

When I want a treat, it is usually dark chocolate.

Maintenance is the hardest part of this process in my opinion. I find that I can gain weight very quickly but the good news is, If I go off track, my tool is right there to help me get it together and those couple of pounds will come off rather quickly. I battle with the same 5lbs up and down and I am under my goal regardless.

Gaining is my biggest fear. I love my new much smaller body and I want to keep it there. I purchased all new clothes and I dont want to go in the wrong direction so I am careful about how far and how often I wander from my plan.

Hello James,

Thank you so much for sharing that information. It was very informative and you look great. It has been 10 months for me since I had gastric bypass and have many challenges. I am definitely going to keep this maintain a phase in mind. I am in my goal weight due to TPN that I receive because before I was underweight due to all my complications. I have gained a few pounds but I am where I am suppose to me. I still having problems keeping food down most of the time. I wonder if I am doing something wrong.

Hello Djmohr,

What kind of Protein and vegetables do you eat? Is it true that it's better to eat cooked vegetables than fresh vegetables or salads? My surgeon told me to stay away from salad and raw vegetables and I am 10 month out.

No absolutely not. Fresh organic fruits and vegetables are amazing for your body. Cooking them removes most of the benefits from it.

As far as Protein, if you are looking for plant based options...some include lentils, Beans, spinach, chickpeas, etc. Plenty of options.

Thanks for responding. I need to get ideas or recipes so I can start eating right. I am on TPN but they want me to start trying to eat to see if I don't vomit as often to remove the TPN treatment.

My problem was I was hardly having any Protein a day. I mean hardly and wasn't eating right.

I'm almost 11 months out and my diet has completely changed from before. Even now, I still eat mostly proteins-steak, fish, nuts, cheese, Jerky, eggs and then a few vegetables. Once or twice I've had a bite of pumpkin bite(literally 1 bite not like a whole slice) at the end of a meal and it was nice and just made me not think about wanting pie. I don't eat Pasta, potatoes, bread(except on the rarest occasion I may take a bite), rice, or Desserts in general. It's just too risky a slope when you know what you have to lose if you fall back on bad habits. I plan to stay in this mindset always and not slowly creep the crap back in.

I'm trying to plan ahead as much as possible. Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming up soon, and while I may be cooking those meals, I won't be able to eat them.

I'm thinking broth from the turkey neck might be okay for Thanksgiving, though.

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
