Reassurance, thoughts?

Ok, so today was day 16 post surgery and I feel great. No problems at all. My only concern is that I lost about 10 pounds in the first 7 days and have only lost 1 pound in the 9 days since. Did this happen to anyone else? I know about embracing the stall and everything, but this was quick! I'm getting my Protein.....could probably get a bit more Water in, and I feel great. Clothes do fit noticeably different, so definitely good there. Just need to trigger some weight loss. Lol

Now is the time to embrace the stall. And there will be many more along your weightloss journey. Your body is healing and adjusting, so do your part with meeting Protein and Water goals. We all want the weight to just continue to drop but that isn't reality, even though it is frustrating at times.

I stalled at about the same time (actually at 20 days, and at 21 I gained a lb). I stayed off the scale for about 4 days and followed the plan. When I got back on the scale, I had lost 4 lbs. and I am now waiting longer between weigh-ins. Don't let it get you down. Just focus on what you need to do and stay away from the scale for a bit!

My RNY was on 8/23 and I have only lost around 10 pounds, it's very frustrating. What type of Protein shakes is everyone using? I use Ensure but I worry it's too many calories, any advice?

Ensure? Ensure Enlive? This is the nutrition info for Enlive

That is a HUGE amount of carbs/sugar for a Protein shake, as well as calories.

If you are using REGULAR ensure, it's worse- because of the low Protein count--

post-284996-14739889999094_thumb.jpg

You need to be certain that

- you are choosing a Protein Drink that has enough GOOD usable protein in it- at LEAST 20-25 G protein per serving

- the carbohydrates in it are usable and not sabotaging your caloric intake- your sugars, under the carb section, should be LOW

- your drink is not highly caloric - mine are typically no higher than 170-200 calories.

"Food" for thought.

I can't imagine any NUT allowing for Ensure

If you are not vegan/vegetarian then your primary source of protein- and the FIRST ingredient should be

whey PROTEIN ISOLATE

Not whey blends, or protein blends

There are others that are good too, but start with that.

powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury, Bariatric fusion, Jay Robb, Syntrax. There are more, but that's a place to start.

Good luck

My surgeon told me to stay away from Ensure and similar drinks. I've used Unjury since my surgery in December, and it has worked well for me.

I agree with @LisaMergs. My surgeon specifically said Ensure was NOT a good source of Protein.

If you are looking for something easy, there are some good ready to drink brands like Premier Protein and Muscle Milk (just stay way from the Muscle Milk smoothies - also very high in sugar).

Thanks, @@kimini

I know there are tons of people here who will disagree or flame me, but premiere Protein is not a good first choice.

The Protein blend they use lists milk protein concentrate as its first ingredient. Then Calcium caseinate and THEN whey protein concentrate.

I mean, what EXACTLY are they saying milk protein concentrate is? And they don't say what percentage each of the three are-

I want to KNOW exactly what I'm putting in my body- and first choice is WHEY PROTEIN ISOLATE for maximum fast absorbing protein and the second one I want is casein protein for a longer lasting absorption.

These companies that have their own proprietary "blends" can keep them in my opinion.

Premier Protein RTD is far down my list of acceptable.

Bring in the firing squad.

  • @LisaMergs no offense taken. I'm sure we all can learn something about how to best fuel our bodies. Premier Protein has been a good solution for me, as I am busy and don't always have the time to make a shake in the morning and have no access to a blender at work (haven't tried the shaker bottles and don't have one). Also, this was on my list of approved Protein sources, with 30g of protein and only 1 g of sugar.
  • As someone who has been at this a little longer, you seem to have done your research, and that is something those of us who are newer at this can learn from.
  • I will admit that some of the posts I read on here sound a bit preachy, but when it is expressed as an opinion, or "what works for me", I feel like it's more well received. Thanks for the advice!

Bulleted text? How did that happen?

My surgeon recommended Premier Protein. You definitely have to read labels. Ensure is what they give anorexics to gain weight. It wouldn't be a very good choice for bariatric patients in my opinion.

None of us lose at a constant or steady rate. We all experience stalls and weight fluctuations. Everyone stalls and just about everyone e experiences a stall about three weeks post-op.

Stalls are a normal, natural, and necessary part of the process of losing weight.

Just follow your program. Focus on getting in all of your Protein and fluids. Take your Vitamins and supplements as directed. Exercise cleared. And, Embrace the Stall

Thanks everyone for the advice. I had a feeling that the Ensure was the problem, it has 220 calories and only 9 grams of Protein. Before I had surgery I was using powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein powder with a tblsp of chocolate powdered Peanut Butter. I'm going to switch back to that.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
