Any coffee drinkers in the house?

Recommended Posts

As I sit here this beautiful and sunny Labor Day relaxing in my sunroom with my coffee, I have to ask....Will I still enjoy my coffee after surgery? Why is it that there is a no caffeine rule? What about Decaf coffee? I quit smoking a couple of years ago and coffee is my new vice. I really enjoy it and I think I'd be ok if it was decaf.

What are your thoughts? Do you still drink coffee?

I watched a YouTube video by a surgeon at a new Jersey clinic give post surgery eating advice..he said caffeine and coffee are fine bc coffee isn't carbonated. He did say to limit coffee intake. I've been drinking it and am still losing with no whacky cravings..

I'm sitting on the patio at Starbucks enjoying a SFVanilla hot latte right now

My NUT said one cup a day is fine. That's why mine is a venti. Well. The one I'll have tonight will be a venti, as well lol.

But I follow my NUT plan and such to the "T", don't have GERD, and exercise. If I want my dang coffee, I'm having it.

I gave up coffee during my pre-op two week phase. I have not had any since. Truthfully I don't miss it. I drank two cups every morning for the past 40 years and now I don't. I get up every morning and start my day without it. I can't believe how much time I spent every day for the past 40 years having an affair with that little cup of joe!.

The no caffeine rule is just after surgery.... How long depends on your surgeon. My surgeon allowed it after 2 short weeks. But that doesn't mean my sleeve was ready for it. When I tried it early on it made my stomach hurt and still can't drink it unless I get the low acid variety form Amazon(pure roast). Another thing I do is get fairlife milk and put the coffee drops in it. Makes a nice high Protein ice coffee. Most of us who want coffee find a way.

My surgeon allowed coffee as one of my clear liquid pre and post surgery. I am 6 days out and I mix 1/2 scoop of Isopure Protein with some cold vanilla Creamer and then pour that info my coffee. I'm thrilled because coffee keeps me "moving" if you know what I mean.

That's funny! I've a fellow bypass friend who literally make a concoction each and every morning- she's a school teacher and said it lasts her to lunch.

She uses one Premier Protein shake, a scoop of unflavored Protein, an equal amount of coffee to the premier shake, squirts in some SF Torini syrup- whatever her mood fancies that day- some SF FF sweet cream Coffemate and tons of ice. shakes it up and keeps it on her desk and drinks all morning.

That's a lot of work for a cuppa but a bariatric gal has to do what she has to do.

Love this! Can you find out how many grams of protein she counts for this? I think this is going to be my new habit ASAP!

Caffeine is a diuretic, so to much of it leaves us at risk for dehydration.. I am a nightshift nurse and neeeeed my coffee lol.. I have found that many kcup brands that carry half and half (caffeine/decaf) at dunkin and Starbucks, you cal also ask for half and half.. Everything in moderation I think

How did the surgery go? How are you feeling? Do you have a lot to lose?

The surgery was great, no issues.. Pain was very minimum.. I hit a wall like day 5 bc I felt like I was starving all the time but Protein shakes were making me nauseas. I spoke to my nutritionist and with some trial and error, I created a Protein shake that works for me and is delicious, plus it's got 40g of Protein in it.. I freeze the extra shake into Popsicles and will snack on that.. It tastes like ice cream.

I want to lose about 80 pounds.

Starting weight 267.8

Weight before surgery 255.6

Today's weight 240.1

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
