Food Aversions-9 mos out

Recommended Posts

I'm a little more than 9 mos out and am pretty happy with the progress that I have made and the good fortune that I have had in terms of avoiding major complications. I am continuing to struggle with some food aversions that are beginning to concern me and are making it difficult to eat a varied diet. It started with chicken, which the mere thought of eating is completely revolting to me. I'm also increasingly feeling that way now about things like shrimp and pork. All of these are things that I liked before surgery. Making matters worse, I have never really liked fish, so I'm starting to run low on types of meat that I can readily eat. I still consistently hit my daily Protein target, but that is largely with the help of things like Protein Bars, Greek yogurt, small amounts of cheese, and things like chili.

I've mentioned this to my nutritionist, but she has not really had any advice apart from emphasizing the importance of eating a varied diet. Has anyone else dealt with something similar? Were you able to do anything to improve things?

Things that I was lukewarm about before surgery, I really hate now.

I don't like chicken, it is usually dry and hard to digest. I eat it maybe once a week, instead of almost daily.

I love fish and I love it even more post-op.

I didn't eat pork before but I like it now because it has a lot of flavor, very little is very satisfying and it has nice fat content.

I loved steak before, and I still love it now.

Are there reasons you don't like these things? Have you had them get stuck? Are they hard to digest? Do you not like cooking? You need to get to the root cause of why you don't like these things.

I will admit that I get lazy and eat the same thing a lot or for several days in a row just because it is easier to log. One thing I started doing differently, was forcing myself to eat something different at each meal, so I am not just eating steak all day, or pork chops all day. I make myself have like turkey burger, steak, pork chop, steak. So even if I am eating the same things, it is different at each meal. It is too easy to just eat the same thing to just get the Protein in, especially when you aren't that attached or interested in food.

Although you're a guy and I can appreciate that it's probably annoying to not be interested in good sources of Protein, for me, developing a distaste for food in general is probably what has kept me at goal. I used to love fish, except it made me sick a few times, like hellaciously, puking for hours sick, and now I look at it and think...nope, I want nothing to do with that. The same is true for a lot of other foods, not just those that are otherwise good sources of Protein. My friend sent me a picture of his dinner last night, which was a crab cake and shrimp wrapped in bacon and my cheeks started to get that twingey, barfy feeling, just looking at it. That dinner was really high in protein, but I would have been gagging in 5 minutes.

I embrace the fact that a lot of the stuff I don't eat ultimately just makes me eat less in general and keeps me at goal. I like small amounts of chicken, although dry chicken doesn't go well. Steak is good, for about 2-3 bites. Pork is eh, ok, for 2-3 bites. I feel like that's the goal though to an extent. We're not supposed to want to eat the whole steak anymore and thanks to my total disgust with eating more than a few bites of it, largely because I know it's going to make me sick, I have no problem having a few bites of most food, enjoying those, and then being totally not interested in eating more than I should eat. It's a blessing in disguise.

I feel the same way. Pre surgery I had very few dislikes. Now I turn my nose up at chicken, tuna, almost all veggies and fruit. It's hard to find something that appeals to me.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
