WLS is life changing ! & very hard

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery 7-15-2016 , exactly 1 mth ago and it's very hard and life changing. I wonder everyday what did I just do.. ? To myself. It's very hard and nothing easy about it. Your food choices change and it's very emotional. Restaurants you can forget them for now. I do follow the food plan, I am very strict and careful on what I am eating. If you get somethings stuck one time you will never try to do that again.. It's hard. I do see weight loss.. I have lost 30pounds in 1 mth since surgery. I am 8 pounds from under 200 pounds.. Can't wait for that. But it's been hard. I just wish everyone luck on there journey if your just starting. It does get better, everyday. But it's still hard and emotional. Good luck!

My mom has had the sleeve and I still take her out on Sundays. You don't have to "forget" about going to a restaurant but you definitely need to be mindful of what you eat and to eat slow so that you don't end up being in pain.

Are you there God? It's me, Gigi.

Congratulations on your weight loss thus far. Every day gets a little better but it took me 6 months to reach my happy state when most of the problems seemed to melt away. This short article describes my experience in the Weight Loss phase. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

Yep it's hard the first month but it gets better. At about 3 months I started feeling back to normal. At 6 months I'm now in my "ecstatic" state! I can't believe the change to my body.

I still sometimes have challenges with food, but for me it's so worth it. Apart from the improve on health, I can't believe how good I look in jeans right now (vain I know, but I use to hate my thighs).

I hope you reach your ecstatic state soon!

CurlySueandthesleeve , you mentioned food getting "stuck". Do you know about papaya tablets? I have yet to need them, but bought some from the pharmacy to have on hand. Also, I go to restaurants with friends/family and drink my endless glass of unsweetened iced tea while we visit. Be sure to ask for a to-go cup!

Encouraging to hear the reports of 3 mo and 6 mo emotional stages. I am 4 wks out tomorrow. Had a couple of "pity party" days in that time, but mostly doing great. Of course, my dad died 5 days after my surgery, so could account for some of it.

I'm 9 weeks out. While it's been a little challenging, I've found that attitude is key.

I've eaten out several times... I've either ordered Soup (early on when I couldn't eat any kind of solids), or things like hummus or fish.

I have had things stuck a few times now. I've learned/ am learning that my pouch isn't ready for dense meats yet. But that's OK because I have always found something I can eat on the menu.

I have the papaya tablets. I've tried them a few times... it seems that you really need to chew on more than 1 or 2 to really get them to help. Last time something was sitting heavy, I ate 5 of them, and in about an hour I felt much better.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
