August Bandsters How are you Doing So Far

Recommended Posts

Hey all.....

Went in for my 2nd fill and found that my first fill did not really "work"......she tells me that "the line was not primed" so the 1 cc fill was more like a .5cc. So, they filled me up to 1.2 cc. Not sure if I feel any restriction or not. I did the soft foods through today and then had a salad with tuna mixed in for dinner....which I could finish with no problem. So, I guess you can say that I just don't know if I have any restriction or not. I am off tomorrow to take care of a few things at home and then I hope to go and join the Bally Fitness Center near my house. They are running a special. My daughter (16 years old) belongs but has not been going as often as she had been. Which, of course, is very frustrating to me since I pay the monthly fee. One of the issues is that she is not driving yet so she is dependent on someone else driving her. The 2 friends that she joined with seemed to have lost interest as well. Instead, the 3 of them go to Starbucks after school instead of the gym!!! Anyway, I'm thinking that maybe she would go more often if I was driving there a few times a week. And, let's face it....something has to get me out the door since the thought of walking in the bitter cold keeps me from doing it! With the holidays staring me in the face and the feeling that I do not have much restriction, this seems like a reasonable expense for me. Plus, I've found that with the onset of the cold weather, DH and I spend alot more time watching TV than ever before! I need to MOVE not sit! (Hey....maybe I can motivate DH to get in shape too. After all, his 50th birthday is 6 weeks away!!!!)

Does anyone else belong to a gym? If so, how regularly do you go? What type of exercises do you do? And, do you have a personal trainer there or at least someone to tell you what you need to do for the results you want? Thanks so much for any info you can share!

Judi, I have a friend that is a personal trainer. He recommended a book called Body for Life by Bill Phillips. I did the BFL plan quite a few years ago. It has a great woorkout regimen inside it. You can tailor it to suite you. Back in the diet yo-yodays, I lost 55 lbs in 2 months following his diet/exercise program and have been using it again since being banded. Hope it will work for you too...Dave

So I just got back from the doctor last night and am very sore (12 hours of driving!) They did an unfill, but the nurse had a hard time getting the needle into the port. So she had to move it around a lot. It was done under fluoro, but she just couldn't get the needle in for about 10 minutes. Finally it went in and she pulled out 1.6cc (I originally had 3.6 put in) When I talked to the doctor he said that I irritated my esophogus, but the band looks great. When talking to him on the phone, prior to examination, he said that I would most likely have to be on 2 weeks of liquids followed by 2 weeks of mushies, but today he said I could try mushies after 4 or 5 days and see if it still hurts.

On a good note, the doc was very impressed with my weightloss. He said they consider the band successful if you lose 50 pounds in 1 year. I have lost 50 in 3 months. whoo.gifHe said it was rare for someone with my starting BMI to lose that quickly. Guess I must be doing something right!

DO YOU SEE THIS TICKER... IT IS HOLDING ON TO THAT DANG 2 FOR DEAR LIFE.

Val- Thanks for the kind words, I hope being unfilled won't set me back. I am literally at the tipping point into onderland so I think I will be motivated. If I was very far on either side of that weight, it could have presented more problems, but being soooooo close, I think I will manage!

That's good news Salsa. This is one of those "things aren't always as bad as they appear". I'm glad it wasn't your band and do agree with a 50 lb loss already, you wouldn't have a problem continuing to lose. And you'll be off mushies just in time for Thanksgiving (even though I know you'll do great with portion control)!!! Keep doing what you're doing!!

My doc was a little worried that I would be unfilled during Thanksgiving, but I told him that it wouldn't be a problem because we are actually moving Thanksgiving day. It is the only day that both my BF and I have off together so we just decided to skip the meal since I wouldn't be able to eat much any ways. My esophogus is still really sore today so it still hurts to drink, but I am not getting the pains in the stomach. I still can't get in enough calories. I only had about 600 calories today. We ran out of Peanut Butter so I need to go to the store tomorrow to get some. I can add that to my Protein smoothies and that helps bump up the protein. If I don't get around 1000 calories, I stop losing. Keeping my fingers crossed that the darn scale realizes that a 2 at the beginning of the number isn't necessary. A 1 is normal. Been a LOOOOOOOOOONNNNG time since I have been there. 4 years or so. And even then it was for a fleeting moment.

I made it, I made it. For those of you who heard a faint shrieking this morning about 1 hour ago, that would be me screaming when I stepped on the scale. 199.5. Can't get any closer with my scale, but it no longer had a 2 anywhere in the number. Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Everyone,

I'm Marsha. I was banded on August 22, 2007. I've had 4 fills already (2cc, .5cc, 1cc and 2.5cc) and I don't feel much restriction. If I eat too fast the food does get stuck and that's painful. However, I'm relying on self control and it's not working too well. I do o.k. during the day but at night I can't stop eating. Also the doctor said my band was an 8. I'm not sure what that means. I've lost 23 lbs. so far but 10 of those pounds were lost the first week, so 13 lbs. in 4 months doesn't seem like a lot. I'm getting discouraged. What does it feel like to have enough fill?

Marsha - When I saw my doc 2 days ago, he said that he considers it a success if you lose 50 pounds in 1 year. So if you take that into consideration you should have lost a total of 16.7 pounds in 4 months. You are ahead of the game. Some of us lose faster than others and we all get discouraged when the scale doesn't read what we want.

The band does require a lot of self control and will power. The band has helped me enormously, but it requires that I choose good foods most of the time, that I only eat at specific times, and that I exercise. If I am hungry at times other than meal time, I really make myself determine if it is head hunger or real hunger. 99 times out of 100 it is head hunger. If it is real hunger, I try to stave it off by drinking crystal light or diet (not light) cranberry juice. By doing that I make myself not eat for at least a half hour and by then the hunger usually passes. For the head hunger I just look at the voided 17000$ :omg:checks that I have hanging on my fridge and the cabinet where the snackish food is. That usually stops me.

My suggestions are to look at the amount of Protein you are eating, the amount of times you are eating, and the number of calories. You have to make sure that you are eating enough. I know that sometimes we lower the amount of calories that we eat to try to lose those few extra pounds and it backfires on us. While I was on liquids the last few days because I ate to fast and food got lodged (PAINFUL!) I didn't get enough calories and didn't lose a thing. Yesterday I got to 1100 calories and today was into onederland. Calories in and calories out works most of the time, but there is a limit.

As for what restriction feels like, I can't tell you. I didn't think that I was that restricted prior to my incident and now I am completely unfilled. Soooo...it looks like maybe the two of us are really going to have to rely on our self will. You have made the first step however. Coming here to get support will certainly help. The people here are great and keep you honest!

Good luck and stay in touch.

Hurray for you! You will most likely see me on CNN the day I break the 200 barrier!! Don't know yet what I'll do, but it'll be crazy enough to garner national attention, I'll wager!! LOL

I'm SO aggravated about how my scales keep hanging -- drop a pound or two then SIT THERE for a month, drop another....

Well -- I got REALLY pissed and went and joined LA Fitness today!! I have a 7 AM appt. to meet with a trainer tomorrow. I went ahead and prepaid for three years -- OUCH! I know, but about what I'd pay for a decent machine at home and I don't have to figure out where to put it!

And it's convenient to home, plus I drive past it multiple times a week, so it'll "NAG" me if I"m not going.

But I've decided that when they say, "You can't DO IT on diet alone", they must've been talking about me. Even my walking a mile a day wasn't pulling it off either.

I'm mad as a guinea wasp now -- :) -- so hopefully we'll get some results!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
