Being denied due to weight gain...

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I have my very first appointment on June 27th for the seminar. I'm starting to feel kind of scared. Ever since I mentioned the bypass surgery it seems everyone has a death horror story to tell me. I am a type 2 diabetic, my weight is 307, and I have high blood pressure. My doctor told me this surgery would be great for me. Can people really die from this surgery? If so, why and from what?

Unfortunately, people can die from any surgery if you want to be technical.

Please don't dwell on the negatives. Remember why you're starting this process and why you're bettering your life!

Your situation is similar to mine as far as the health issues. Please try not to dwell on the risks - think of it more as without the surgery your health will not improve.

My primary care dr is amazingly supportive as are all the professionals I've seen for screenings. My extended family doesn't know I'm pursuing this yet - but by and large I have support from those that do know.

This is a choice you make for your future.

Good luck with the seminar!

Sounds like your NUT doesn't really know what she is talking about. I would call the person that does the insurance submissions and ask them about the gain/loss weight requirement. AND you will have to have Protein shakes post-op, so if she doesn't like them now, I wonder what she will recommend post-op. Try the Premier Protein ready to drink shakes. Great Protein and very low sugar. For a powder, check out Precision Engineered whey Protein Isolate. I have had great success with it and really like the taste (also very low sugar). The vanilla even smells heavenly. Lastly are you writing down all your food in a log somewhere (ie MyFitnessPal or LoseIt or Livestrong/MyDailyPlate? You will need to do this post-op, so it is a great habit to get in now to see how many calories, protein, fat and carbs you are really getting. What you think may be "very little carbs" may in fact not be.

I do use my fitness pal. I have for about a year now. And Protein Shakes actually aren't recommended much in my program. powder yes. But shakes no. I also get started on clear purees the day of, and regular purees by day three. It's weird. But the best, nationally known Bariatric hospital around me. I have confidence in it.

My surgeon recommends shakes like Premier Protein. They have the protein, but are artificially sweetened, so each shake has a whopping 1g of sugar.

@@qmissy824 Don't listen to the "my mother worked with a woman who's brother died from weight loss surgery" stories! The orientation will review the complications and risks. There are far more risks of dying from obesity than there is from WLS. It is extremely important to follow your surgeon's pre-op and post-op instructions - that will drastically reduce your risk of complications! Good luck on your journey!

I was 274.7 at my first WI in April. I'm currently 276.6. My next appt isn't until Sept 21st, so I'm hoping I can lose the 2.1 or more before then. I'm starting out slow and cut my Coke intake down a ton and only allow myself one small can once a day. I'm planning on cutting them out completly next week. The next goal will be to start drinking a shake in the morning. This is HUGE because I'm not a morning eater. I have 9 more months (3 months into insurance required 12 month health education program) to lose the clinic's required 5 to 10 lbs. I CAN DO THIS!!!!!

The OP's post has been a HUGE help with all the responses. Thanks for posting this!

I lost 14 lbs my first 3 visits & then I maintained my weight only dropping 1lbs my 5th visit....my PCP Sd "your weight has been remarkably stable"....I'm assuming there was a hint of sarcasm??? I told him I tried best I cld (was on road the last month) to count calories...but was wondering if this was a bad thing only losing 15lbs in 6mo? I was told I only need to lose 18lbs for surgery on my 1st visit... My last visit is nxt Friday & I was debating on doing liquid diet just to shed off those last 3lbs....any suggestions? Or comments?

I'm on a 6 months pre op program with a supervised diet before I can be submitted to my insurance company for approval. I'm required to lose 5% of my total weight which equaled to about 17 lbs. My 2nd weigh in showed no change on the scale and my third weigh in showed an increase of 8lbs and my 3rd weigh in showed an increase of another 8lbs. So I was about half way in and instead of losing 17lbs I gained 16lbs. One of my doctors had a serious conversation with me basically questioning how bad I wanted surgery. That was a real turning point for me because there is nothing that I want more in life at this moment than surgery, At my 4th weigh in I saw a decrease of 3lbs, a small victory but a victory non the less. I knew it was possible for me to lose the weight I just had to really push myself. I did that by reducing my calorie intake, cutting out all fried foods, sugars, juices, soda, reducing my carb intake, and working out in the gym for about an hour 5 times a week. Today was my 5th weigh in and I was down 15lbs, and under my initial starting weight. I still have 15 lbs to lose to reach my goal pre op weight and I have 21 days to do it but I won't be defeated. What I realized is that I've let my weight stop me from doing so many things in life. I've missed ample opportunities and sold my self short so many times. I'll be damn if I let my weight stop me from this life changing opportunity. You can do it girl. I hope this helped and makes you feel like your not alone.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
