Hi everyone, I was wondering what the time frame is that you no longer have to worry about getting a leak in your gastric sleeve. I heard a few horror stories out there and it's got me a little scared. Surgery will be in July! Thanks

My doc said if a leak was going to happen it happens in the first few days/week.

But that's just what I was told by my specific doctor, so I'd ask your doctor for what they have experienced.

My surgeon said he's only had one leak but it was due to a stapler malfunction....

You are out of danger for a leak after about 2 weeks. Your doctor may do a test before you leave the hospital to check for leaks, depends on their practice. Mine didn't, but I know some that do it. Leaks are very rare, but serious. They are also fixable.

I don't know where people are getting the 2 week timeframe. According to my surgeon, things like steroid use can cause leaks much later than 2 weeks after surgery.

Leaks are very rare. If you have concerns, please talk to your surgeon.

Leaks caused by taking steroids would be the result of something the person with the sleeve did that had an adverse effect.... Leaks two weeks and less would be directly linked to a surgical complication....

I was scared of leaks, too, especially being self pay and knowing my insurance would not cover any costs of complications. I researched the heck out of ever possible complication scenario. I really wanted to know when I could stop worrying about every little twinge and rumble and "funny feeling" I had after surgery. It was 6 months before I finally let myself breath a sigh of relief.

The funny thing is, I Was so worried about the complications that I never bothered to get stressed about the pre and postop diets, slow weight loss, stalls, constipation, diarrhea or hair loss.
