When will I stop regretting this surgery?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved in march 21...let me tell u the first week was hell!!! Traveling in a car sucked...i would take a pillow and hug it but had it...walking was very slow...but a nice firm cami did the trick..sipping oh lord i was using disposable shot glasses! (Still have some) dont even get me started on pain....but it all got better!!! I drink normal no issues but i have an app that reminds me...eating ehh still prefer liquids but i eat cottage cheese, chicken, fish anything soft...pain every once in a while.something new comes around but goes away...its the first 2/weeks that really gonna suck but it DOES get better!! The only thing i can say is find YOUR TEMPERATURE!!! Foods/liquids are all better and easier to go down if u know what ur body likes...before surgery ice cold was my fav...now nope!! All food and liquid needs to be warm to hot. Once i figured that out it was down hill.

I never had regret. The first few months were the hardest. They require the most work from you. Make sure you get your Water and Protein in! After the first few months I learned what it was like to be a "normal" person who was not driven by food. Today marks one year from my surgery. I still have a way to go to hit goal. But I feel like a completely new person. You can't reverse this, so embrace it and all it has to offer! Here is my 1 year before/after. post-5173-14620198557394_thumb.jpg

Okay I'm due to get my sleeve in June and everyone is kind of freaking me out. I hope everyone gets to enjoying and loving their sleeve like I imagine myself doing so....

It's good to be well informed of all aspects. As you can see from reading these boards everyone's experience is different and some things you just don't know until you go through it. Some days have been better than others and that's a fact. My biggest issues are the acid reflux and lower back pain. I'm taking Hydrocod/ Acetaminophen around the clock to manage it. In the past, I was able to drink a cold ginger ale or take a couple of Tums and it's over. That is not the case now. Also, I used to love a big cold glass of Water, and I can't do that anymore. Even though I don't weigh myself daily I can visibly see the weight melting off. My BMI was I think 39 going into surgery, I weighed 240, I'm 5'6. Just be well informed and ask your surgeon what you can do now, if anything, to have the best outcome. Best wishes to you.

@Ida33, did your surgeon prescribe a PPI for your acid reflux? Most do, if not, call your bariatric team and ask for one. It helps a great deal with the reflux.

Yes, I'm taking Protonix once daily for 30 days. Maybe it would be worse if I wasn't taking it idk, but I make sure to take it.

Im 10 days post op and at first i was regretting it, asking myself what on earth did i do... however when i started on pureed foods and was able to take in more Protein n Water a day, i felt better. Remember ur stomach is healing so it's going to hurt when u drink or eat. It's hard for me to eat slow so i get some pain but spoke to my NUT and she says i have to remember my tummy is healing so it's normal for some discomfort.

I crave the lasagna and pastas etc...or when i cook for my family but i always keep in mind that i did this for ME...my health and it's a matter of time. Give yourself time to heal...it WILL get better be patient. My prayer go out to you..seek advice from ur NUT, Doctor that's what they are there for..you shudn't have to feel that way by urself... :)

Hey everyone! I got sleeved on the 26th of April. I kind of feel the opposite of regret, I'm very anxious. I keep stepping on the scale hoping to see a change. I'm only 4 days post op so I'm probably being ridiculous but I'm just very impatient. I'm not minding the liquid diet since I have no appetite at all anyway and the pain has been fairly manageable. I did notice yesterday my lips started peeling and I felt very light headed so I'm focusing on my Water input today. The last thing I need is to be dehydrated.

I have a 2 month old and an almost 3 year old as well as a husband to feed so making and feeding them dinner has been kind of a tease. I have to do this liquid diet for 3 weeks so I have a while to go maybe when the hunger kicks in I'll start to feel more regretful.

I was sleeved 3/30 and about a week or two after surgery I was miserable and definitely regretted the surgery. I let myself get dehydrated which caused a lot of pain and nausea and then caused some pretty bad Constipation. I started slowing down and taking care of myself and now I feel fine . Things have started clearing up in the past week and no more nausea . I'm still slacking in the energy but wasn't taking my Vitamins like I was suppose to do I'm sure once they've been in my system for awhile things will be fine

It does get better :) hang in there . Let me know if you want to talk privately

Okay I'm due to get my sleeve in June and everyone is kind of freaking me out. I hope everyone gets to enjoying and loving their sleeve like I imagine myself doing so....

Everyone's experience is unique. I had anticipated being in significant pain immediately following the VSG and for a few weeks afterwards, and was surprised that it was relatively minor. I started my period during the surgery, and it was like the cramps were amplified tenfold that first day. The staff was excellent and gave me ample pain medications that dulled the discomfort. I'd also brought a heating pad with me, and it helped. I was up and walking relatively quickly, and was even told I needed to slow my pace. After being released from the hospital I felt well enough to go shopping. I had the surgery in Tijuana due to insurance not being willing to cover any of the expenses (my BMI was under 35), and live in Los Angeles a couple of hours away. We went sightseeing in San Diego and shopped at an outlet mall on the way back. The first couple of weeks I was more tired than normal, but I had very little pain. I did have some stomach issues at the one month mark when I slowly began eating solid foods again. I had to revert to liquids for a while. I did worry about dehydration. My doctor actually told me to have Gatorade since it had calories I needed and my stomach tolerated it well. It's not something to have as part of your everyday consumption, but while sick it helped me.

I do think it's helpful to equip yourself with the knowledge that it is normal to have regrets post surgery I watched many YouTube videos by people who had the VSG and their experiences, read a book about the "sleeved life", and read through this forum and others. Repeatedly people said they had "buyer's remorse" in their first month. Over time as they healed and adapted the regrets faded and they were grateful for their decision. I've actually never had any regrets about having the VSG, but I think knowing that if I did I could persevere through them helped me.

I'm 10 weeks post op and still have moments of regret, especially lately....I've been struggling with what feels like acid reflux and extreme gas followed by bouts of diarrhea for the past 3-4 days...I feel good most of the day but then come evening and night it flares up [emoji20]. If I'm still this way come Monday I'm going to see my Dr again. We need to figure this out! I have bouts of depression too which I never had before surgery. Sorry I'm not much help!

I hope those that are experiencing depression are talking to their Drs about it. There's no reason to live with that feeling - you may need some meds or maybe there's a medical reason for it (thyroid, Vit D deficiency, anemia).

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
