Anyone have gastric balloon removed prior to 6 months?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had their gastric balloon removed early? I've had mine for only a week, but reading comments from everyone, I'm not sure how you went back to work and were still quite nauseated for the 1st 4 - 6 weeks. Many of you have stated you finally felt better about 6 weeks in. Let me know your thoughts!

Interested in replies. I am 6 weeks in. At my four week appt I was going to schedule an early removal but felt better that day so gave the balloon another chance! I never feel normal. I had a brutal bout of reflux week 3-4. That is gone but now I have stomach ache every evening, like I swallowed a bowling ball. I can live with that, as long as it's not accompanied by reflux.

Thanks for your response. I really felt my practice was not listening to me about my symptoms. I certainly did not plan to take time off of work for a week and it wasn't recommended at the time I had booked my procedure. I wish I had. I am lucky enough to work from home this week along with some vacation time. I have to go back to the office. I told them today I had arranged for a driver and was coming tomorrow to take this out, but the doc asked me to try 2 more meds. If these don't work, I'm going on Monday to have it removed. I hope more people reply. What are you taking for the reflux? I was already taking 40mg of Nexium a day, and I have increased it to 2 a day...not that it has helped.

Keep in touch!

I take 20mg of omeprazole. Doctor says I can up it to 40 mg, but I only do that on days when its bad. He also said I can add Zantac when its bad. Its important, I have learned, to eat dinner early, before 6, and eat a light dinner. The other issue I battle is gas! Last night was the worst ever. I only had a small dry baked potato and 3 oz grilled chicken. You'd think I had a massive dinner at a Mexican restaurant...lol!

What is a gastric ballon? Would someone mind enlightening me?

@@jansluv I have had mine 3 weeks and feeling quite good. Only had sickness first 3 days, but I try and stick to the 20, 20 rule of eating and drinking. I also try and drink plenty of Water as it keeps the balloon washed and clear of food debris. I take 40mg of omeprazole but they want me to have that foe the full six months. I have just eaten one sausage, mashed potato and Beans and feel fine. It was so good to have something to chew rather than mince or Soup. I try to eat soup for my lunch at work, but know I can only eat 8 to 12 tablespoons or I will feel over full. I have also found I cannot tolerate much greasy foods. I hope you can tolerate it, it means you will lose the weight you are hoping to lose. Good luck ????

I have been on this forum for 4 weeks and have read many different experiences. Every person's body is going to have their own reactions. I eat very little, never after 6, I drink Water and my food choices are extremely healthy. But I get reflux and bad gas. And to top it off I have only lost 13 pounds. But, that's 13 I would not have lost if I didn't have the balloon. So I'm not willing to have it removed yet, just hoping the good days start to outweigh the bad and the gradual weight loss continues.

It's a saline filled balloon, about the size of a grapefruit that is placed in your stomach for 6 months. It is a non invasive non surgical procedure that makes you feel full so you eat less. The balloon is inserted, unfilled, via a tube through your mouth then filled once it's positioned in your stomach. At 6 months it's removed.

@@jansluv wow. I've never heard of this before. Do you have it changed every 6 months? Or does your tummy need a break after the 6 month period?

Its fairly new. It can cause stomach issues, so to minimize that, it is removed at 6months.

UnderDaSea - Google Reshape Gastric Balloon @https://reshapeready.com/ or the Orbera Balloon @ http://www.orbera.com/. They only stay in for 6 months, stomach acid breaks down the balloon after 6 months.

How are you doing now?

I almost had mine removed. I got IV fluids and then felt a million times better so then I was able to stick it out.

This sounds terrible, but I wish I was sick again. I'm not losing weight any more. I don't feel a lot of restriction with my balloon anymore. I feel normal and I am starving all the time. Which I never really felt before the balloon. I see my doctor next week so hopefully he can give me some advice.

Hi, try to hang in there! I've had my Ballon for 3 1/2 months and I was feeling the same as you for about 2 months! Nexium did nothing for me so I switched to Zantac twice a day and that helps some! I was on all the nausea pills vomoting every other day and it finally went away last month! I take tums in between a chewing gum helps me with the acid after meals! I can't wait until May to get it out but I'm trying to make the best of it now! I've lost 37 lbs!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
