What alcoholic beverage do you drink post-op?

I LOVE beer but bc it's carbonated I can't have it. ????????

I don't want nor need negative or rude comments. I like to have social drinks from time to time. ESPECIALLY since it's Mardi Gras! ????????????

Thanks for you help!

I am 6 months post op. I have yet to try beer. I have a very occasional glass of white wine and can barely tolerate it, as it sits right in my esophagus. i find it best to just not bother with it at all.

I do not know when you had WLS. I used to love an occasional beer but not any more. Wine is smooth and gives me heartburn. Margaritas made me gain weight. I want to drink but I am still trying to find that perfect alcohol.

I have had beer a couple of times, but I do try to avoid carbonation, so have really limited it to just that handful of times. I mostly drink "girly" drinks now post-op. I get drunk SUPER easy, so I can't do shots anymore. If I drink, it's usually some sort of mixed drink, but they have so much sugar, it's a very rare treat.

Maybe you can try a Bloody Mary. It has Tomato juice, so there is slightly something redeeming about them. I had two yesterday at a super bowl party with no issues, or then a buzz that comes on a little bit quicker. The tomato juice has tons of salt, so I wanted get on the scale the next day. I gained two pounds over night and only ate/drank like 1,200 calories for the day.

Not to people in weight loss phase. Alcohol does have calories, so watch you drinking. 400 of the 1,200 calories I had yesterday were drank, and I'm not talking about Protein shakes. Not a good idea to be doing frequently...

I drink beer or dry cider most days [in moderation of course]..

I pour both these over ice & that removes much carbonation.

Most English beers are carbonated much less & less filling than all the domestic type offerings.

They have a nitrogen/CO2 gas mix & one can drink that when out as straight draught or from cans that have widgets in them [when the tab is pulled there will be a whoosh as the beer become lightly carbonated & really creamy]. Then pour into your glass.

Easily identifiable cans usually 500ml @ the liquor store/s.

@@lsubabe33 I am a fan of flavored vodka and crystal lite lemonade. We went to a party last night and I drank Kinky Blue and Lemonade (they didn't have crystal lite) but I try VERY hard to stay away from anything carbonated. I have had a drink of beer and pop before and it gives me horrible gas and gas pains. That alone is enough to keep me away from the carbonation.

Try brandy...you don't need to mix it with anything and it has no carbs.

Or vodka, gin, tequila, etc mixed with Crystal Light.

I am at 11 months.... have not done beer since carbonation worries me. I got for the gin and Water or a shot on the rocks. Less calories than beer and not worried about the bubbles.

And yes, I miss my champagne lots!!!!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
