Sleeve complication

Hi everyone new here, just wanted to share my story hoping it will help someone in the future. And at the same time share your experience please. I was sleeved 12/22/15 with no complications week 3-5 post op I noticed how I was extremely nauseous and really didn't want to eat nor hardly drink. I was told it was normal so I figured it would pass..then week 5...got off of work on a Wednesday evening..and had this extreme feeling of cold and shaking to where I could hardly drive..I went home covered myself with 4 blankets and still couldn't warm up. I then had my husband call the surgeon and I then began to puke. My husband was told to rush me in..so we drove an hour to the e.r where my temp was 101.6 and my heart rate was high..I was automatically admitted. Ultrasound, ct scan and they believed I had a leak. Then the next morning I had a swallow test and well..I didn't have one but they discovered I had liquid and air in my stomach cavity. Oh and did I mention I had an infection.(sepsis) I was told I had an abscess or pinhole leak that healed itself. So I stayed in the sticu for 2 days npo, so very nauseous I felt horrible.. I was hooked up with loads of antibiotics and iv fluids...once everything was stable enough for the surgeon I was moved to a less monitored area..I was extremely dizzy and weak so I stayed there for 3 days, and am home as of yesterday...the only thing I am worried about is if there was "fluid" inside my abdominal cavity shouldn't I have had a drain put in..I'm just a tad bit worried as now that I'm home my side is kinda bothering me...any help would be greatly appreciated!!

So sorry you went through all that! I suspect most people think they are "out of the woods" for a potential leak by 3-5 weeks out, so this is great info for people still awaiting their sleeves or just recently sleeved. It's important to listen to your body and if you experience any of these symptoms, better to get them checked out sooner than later. Thank you for sharing and I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks for sharing your experience - as I was sleeved abroad (1 week ago) I am terrified of having any complications so I am super paranoid.

Just make sure you listen to your body..if you don't feel something is right go to the e.r...please..the Dr's think I had the sepsis for a total of 2 weeks..if I would have waited any longer..well...I may not have made it.. Glory to God he has been my rock????

So sorry you have had such a bumpy road.

I couldn't agree with you more: If you "don't feel right" for any reason, call your surgeon's office and get ready to go to be seen. This website is irreplaceable for support and guidance, but it is not, nor should it be to give medical advise. That is what you paid your surgeon for.

People forget that your surgeon works for you. Do not worry about "bothering him", or asking foolish questions. That's why he has a support staff. Surgeons are more than well paid. You've earned and deserve to have their time to have all of your questioned answered in a polite and professional manner.

So glad you are on the mend.

Glad you are okay. I have a wonderful surgeon but found I could not get past his nurse when I had a scary situation. Make sure you have a good primary doctor for backup, and when in doubt get to that ER. Infection is nothing to play with, and Sepsis is deadly. Most of us will never have a problem, but it is important to share when we do.

Absolutely sepsis is definitely nothing to play with. I thank God for his healing. But realize I still have quite a ways to go. Keeping my eyes open on how I feel daily is key!!

When you say you had a pinpoint leak, is that a leak where they think its so small it eill repair it self ? My girlfriend had har operation. A gastric sleeve, and she where rushed to the hospital 9 days post op. And she had a abscess close to the liver. She totally drained it and they did a swallow test. It showed a very very small leak, that was next to the drain. But nothing came out in the drain. So they keept her on iv and liquid/food through her artery in the neck. Its second week, and she is having a new swallow test on tuesday.. I ptay for her leak is gone. She is in no pain or anything. Her infection numbers are close to normal.. I cant bear to see her like this..

Pinpoint leak is exaclty that..it literally by the grace of the Lord healed itself..what had gotten Me sick was the Fluid that leaked out of before it repaired itself., I also had what was believed to be an abcess on the spleen area.

It's a good thing they caught this early instead of finding out like I did. I just thought all my symptoms were "normal" it was almost to late for me...praying for a full recovery for your girlfriend..

Ok then thats proberly what she has.. They said that they thought it was weird that she had a leak, cuz of how she feels and looks.. No vomit or fever. So they found out that the leak, is lwaking micro and out to NO organs whats so ever. So when she did the pill that turns everything blue. They where waiting to see if it came out of the drain. And it dident. But they keept her 1 week more, just to be sure about how she feels and they hope her leak will heal
