I've incorporated carbs from early on, partly because I had terrible Constipation problems without enough Fiber. I still haven't eaten Pasta or rice... but I eat oatmeal (every day); small amounts of fruit (apples & prunes mainly); quinoa, Beans, lentils, & chickpeas; low-carb tortillas (1/2 at a time); and I occasionally have a little bit of starchy veggies like sweet or regular potatoes, peas, corn, etc. I've only had tiny amounts of bread, and then only out of the house on special occasions (like tonight, I had a small wedge of pita bread with hummus at dinner out for my birthday).

I'm still early in the game(sleeved 12/08/15) so I try to limit my carbs to dairy only. I am a type-1 diabetic on an insulin pump so unfortunately, some carbs are almost a necessity for me. Those are mainly in milk and/or Greek yogurt form, which are fairly low. I am allowed to have saltine crackers with my tuna, rice, grits or oatmeal, etc. on this phase in the diet, but I haven't because I feel like that would be a slippery slope for me.

For me, Mister Carb is the driver on the bus to hell.

I have zero control when I start eating carbs. Garlic bread is the devil's work. Buttery white rice with salt and pepper - I become a fiend. pizza, I will CUT YOU if you try to take my pizza.< /p>

See? See how I get? I can't go there. I can't do moderation at this point, five months out. Since I can't eat any more than 1/3 cup at a time, I eat Protein and a couple of bites of green vegetable. The carbs I get are in greek yogurt and cheese. Maybe once a week I have a couple of grapes.

@@Sharon1964, you made me laugh so hard when I read your post. That is exactly the way I felt about carbs (but you left out the mini York Peppermint Patties!)

The only carbs I take in are with veggies.

I have a bag of frozen berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries) in the freezer - its been there since 2 weeks pre-op. I'm just afraid to have even one piece still. Although, for fruit, they are lower in sugar than most.

I can do a very small amount of cheese if its 'real' cheese, not anything processed like American cheese. And so far, milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, etc. makes me nauseous. I used to love yogurt and cottage cheese.

And I used to love tuna. A bit of mayo to kill the tuna taste, and a small amount of relish to kill the mayo taste. I've tried it twice since surgery (once I was cleared for soft foods) and got sick each time. The only times that nausea turned to actual upchucking since the surgery.

i personally avoid carbs like the plague, now that i am in maintenance mode, its easy to forgive more carbs, or so they say. after having this anti carb attitude for this year , its very hard to suddenly allow them back in. my carbs come from limited sources. i dont eat much if any fruit. that sugar has a nasty habit of showing up in my bottom line etc. nasically my carbs come from some types of rice now and then, brown rice or a little basmati, Beans do work for me no more than once per week. carrots and green Beans once per week each. but things like onion, jalapenos, bell pepper, those happen almost daily. and my skinny girl flatout foldits.

As I am very early in my journey, I find if I follow my surgeons rules with Protein first, I don't have room for carbs. I do eat cottage cheese, all kinds of cheese, apple slices with Peanut Butter, and yogurt which all have carbs. I just make my main focus protein and less than 50 carbs per day. I stay away from white carbs because they bring on sugar cravings ( I found this out when I enjoyed my planned Christmas treats)

I am scared of carbs .... I try to keep them out of my mouth ...

don't get me wrong .... I have had a bite of pizza ... the scraped off the toppings and gave the rest of the crust to the dog ( he LOVES my new way of eating ) ...

I have had a cracker or two ... it's mostly the salt on the top of the cracker that I enjoy ...

Surgeon drilled it into my head before and after that I had to avoid carbs ... being the rule follower I am ... I try to obey :)

I am early in this process, but I am opting for a monitored relationship with carbs. They are a part of my family's regular diet, I just need to work out how to safely enter them into the diet plan. My reality is that I have husband and kids that I cook for and like to share meals with. One of my biggest hurdles with this surgery was to address the social issues with food, drink and being part of the family interactions at the table. I spent a lot of time working my head around how to keep the things I love to do with my family (eat) and stay true to what is good for me. Part of it will be feeding my family meals that are less carb loaded. As the cook, I have some control there! The other part of it will be figuring out how to eat with my family and stay on plan when it is a carb heavy family favorite. I am still working out how to serve spaghetti night, but I think it can be done and not crimp the social interaction for me. I can't imagine never eating fruit or a piece of bread again, but the key is to figure out the relationship.

I try to stick with the better carbs but every couple of days eat a small amount of bread or crackers. I found this seems to confuse my body and the scales seems to move again. I stay away from trigger carbs such as Pasta and don't feel good if I eat any pizza even though I could probably eat half of a piece. I know if I limit myself entirely I am setting myself up for failure and really want to be successful at this for the long term.

Since undoing low carb at the moment this is really relevant to me. I've found doing low carb helps me break the sugar addiction I've fallen into the past few months but also, obviously, for me I lose weight faster.

With that said I ALSO have to be very mindful of calories knowing that for me to lose I have to be somewhere around 1000 a day. To maintain somewhere around 1350 or less.

I started this last Tuesday and have lost about 9 lbs in that time. Quite amazing to me but I know a lot is Fluid retention from the holidays.

My carbs are primarily eggs, hard cheese (light mini baby bel) and chicken. Small amount of beef. I try to keep the veggies to low carb kind with a few small amounts of carrots thrown in once in a while.

For me the hardest is fruit. I LOVE fruit. I was amazed to see on my MFP how many carbs a small banana had!! ????. I do usually have a half a Fuji apple with 1 tablespoon PB2 at night for a snack. I've also had a couple cuties which are not as high in carbs

Once I get really under control and re-lose my 15 lbs I will gradually add back more carbs BUT not like before where it was a free for all.

I need more fats at the moment but scared to add much since this seems to be working for me.

Oh, yeah, and I'm doing REALLY low cal couple days a week (500) twice weekly as part of semi-5:2 intermittent fasting which has worked well for me in the past.

@@teaqueen when I cook a full meal it is Protein, veggie, salad and potatoes or rice. Nobody notices that I skip the carb side dish, and everyone eats healthier with the focus on lower carb veggies prepared in yummy ways while they still get their taters!

I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant and had to severely limit my carbs. The only way I can stick to any particular diet is if there are immediate consequences (the thought of giving my boy a lifetime of diabetes was horrifying enough for me to turn down all sweets and simple carbs). As a result, I *lost* weight while pregnant. And I ate like a quarterback. It was amazing. I've learned my body metabolizes Protein and fat much more efficiently than carbs. Thus the plan is to eliminate simply carbs but eat complex carbs like Beans, oatmeal, veggies, and fruits.

Of course as soon as I gave birth I went and bought a box of doughnuts :blush:

My neighbor, years ago, was coming home from the hospital with her twins. Her hubby was deployed and did not make it back in time for their birth. She also had gestational diabetes and had been following a low-carb diet to help her and the babies.

I drove her and the babies home from the hospital, and she had me drive thru a Krispy Kreme for a box of doughnuts.

She had bypass surgery years later and has kept it off for over 5 years now.

I eat carbs, but very minimal. When I do I make sure they are from low sugar fruits like berries, or low carb whole grain toast. I find the longer I go without them the less I crave them. I crave Protein now a lot. I heard that carbs are extremely important for brain function.

      2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation.       On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
