Approved for Wrong Surgery

Recommended Posts

I had the lapband Nov 2009 . My SW was 242 the lowest weight I got with the band was 218. The band gave me problems , it was difficut to swallow lean meat and I had awful reflux. I became pregnant May 2013 my weight was 230. After pregnancy, I was back at 242 and had to have all the Fluid removed from my band because the reflux was unbearable and I couldnt eat solid eat without vomiting. After the band had no restriction I gained 10 pounds in 1 month.

So I decided to inquire about revision. I had revision consult June . The doctor gave option of sleeve or bypass and explained both thoroughly and could decide later. My insurance required 6 month diet and nut . So my appointent were all set with PA and each time we talked about bypass.

So today I get call from the surgery coordinator I was approved for revision but already knew because my authorization arrived in mail over the weekend. We set surgery for Jan 22 and set up pre op appt.

I wanted to verify the authorization included bypass because it only had band removal as the procedure. She said your approved for band removal and gastric sleeve. Excuse me No. I selected bypass. "Did you change from sleeve to bypass " No I always wanted bypass .She kept all the date set saying the qualification are the same and she willl resubmit for bypass.

Just nervous this could prolong my surgery. Anyone had this issue.

It is my understanding that sleeve will only make severe acid reflux (GERD) worse. That is the reason why most surgeons perform RNY gastric bypass surgery on individuals with this condition.

I had severe acid reflux prior to my RNY surgery 31 months ago. This condition has never been a problem since. Stick to your guns and demand the surgery that you wanted, RNY gastric bypass. It is the best one for you condition.

see what happens after they resubmit. It could have just been a simple keying error on the part of the insurance company. Since they approved you for sleeve, I can't imagine they wouldn't approve you for bypass.

I really hope you are able to get this corrected. I had a severe case of reflux. So bad that I would cough violently all day long and all night long. I was on the gold standard reflux medications at the max dosage and it would not resolve.

RNY completely cured this for me! I have been off medication since 30 days post op and have never even has a single episode of simple heartburn.

I hope you get it worked out!

Good luck!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
