I have read people getting a "drain", does everyone get a "drain", if yes for how long ?

My surgeon does drains for all bypass and sleeve patients. He says that it reduces the risk of infection from 2-5% down to .2% and he wouldn't negotiate not doing one. I had mine for 10 days. It was miserable, but it did have a lot of gross liquid coming out of it that otherwise would have been in my abdominal cavity possibly causing infection so in the end it was a good idea. Don't fret it too much. They show you how to empty it and change the bandages to keep it clean.

But, I did have this interesting ball of numbing agent that was wired into me and hung from my neck.

I have this too. How long did you have to wear it? I was told I could remove it when it goes flat on either Monday or Tuesday.

I think I wore it a couple of days when I got home.

I had a drain but it was removed the next day at my follow up appt.

I have a drain that gets removed this Wednesday. It's really uncomfortable but not unbearable. By the way my surgery was 12/8/2015.

I did not have a drain for my sleeve surgery. I did have 2 of them for my tummy tuck though. worst ever.....

I'm assuming you're talking about a Jackson-Pratt drain (JP drain) I had one, it's not fun but my surgeon finds in necessary. I took mine out eventually because it stopped working. Ask your Dr if he/she uses them. Here's a pic of the sexy little thing! Not mine, just a picture incase you aren't familiar with a drain.

I'm in hospital still. Surgery yesterday, i do have drain, that will be removed tomorrow before discharge.

Not everyone gets a drain. It depends on the surgeon. However having had an abcess from a previous surgery that was so deep I had to have daily wound care for 2 weeks after it was lanced, I can honestly say a drain is a good thing. Mine was removed before I was discharged from the hospital. It's not painful. It's just another way to insure a positive surgical outcome.

This is what it looks like The tubing will be inside and the bulb part will hang outside you body. A nurse will check and empty the Fluid.

Like I said, it's really not a big deal. Just your surgeon being extra cautious.

I was sleeved Monday and I did have a drain. I had it removed Tuesday before I went home. I worried about it so much but the removable was a non-issue. No pain or even discomfort.

No drain here either

I had a drain. It was removed at my one week follow up. Mild discomfort when removed. Not a big deal.

No drain for my sleeve surgery.

I had one for my ACL reconstruction.

My surgeon never gives his patient a drain. I was sleeved on 12/2/2015
