New job and surgery timing

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Newbie here - I've been a stalker for awhile, but I've decided it's time to join the discussions!

Need some advice. I started the process in August, had my first consultation in late September and here I am, already insurance approved for the sleeve in early November. I will very likely get a surgery date for December.

Potential problem - I received a promotion at work and will start working in the new job in two weeks.

Is surgery within the first few weeks of the job going to be too much to handle? It'll be a desk job, so I don't worry too much about physical restrictions.. but I'm more worried about being able to take on two big changes in such a short period of time.

Thoughts??

Only you can decide for sure. There are too many variables; what the pressure of the job will be and how quickly you rebound from surgery being the most prominent.

I would say go for it. I only missed a couple days of work. It would be a shame to miss out on a great opportunity at work for short-term challenge of recovery.

It really depends on how you feel, I'm 2 weeks out today and returned to work this past Monday with only a little fatigue really. I have a physically demanding factory job and do 10 hour days, so it really depends on how you feel I think.

Thank you for the replies!

I think I'm going to go ahead and see if I can get scheduled later in December. 6 weeks into the new job should be enough time to get a good handle on how things work.

I meet with the surgeon next week, and I'll be sure to get his opinion. :)

I would do the surgery as scheduled. Recovery is usually quick and then it's a waiting game for the weight to come off.

Thought I'd give an update.

I talked with the surgeon and have decided to continue with the process. I have a date! My surgeon was able to get me in the last week of the year. I think this will give me enough time to get acquainted with the new job before making this big change!

The countdown is on...woohoo!

Glad you figured out what is going to work best and that your surgeon is flexible enough to work around your schedule. I, too, usually end up scheduling my surgeries around my work. I Had my neck fusion at a University Hospital 5 hours from where I live. I scheduled it when I was already going to be there for a conference. I scheduled my VSG right before Christmas to minimize the days I had to take off work. I'm having my gallbladder removed the day before Thanksgiving to take advantage of the long weekend to recover.

Good luck with your new position and surgery!

Congratulations! I was back to work in about 15 days. Going back sooner would probably have been better. I had no problems with recovery and no pain. A little tenderness that was aggravated by sitting at my desk job but not bad enough for pain meds. Good luck and wear comfy clothes to work.

I work a desk job, and just started a whole new department with in my company. I plan on having the surgery as soon as I am able. I can telecommute if I need to however I had a co worker who Was doing the same job I was before I moved up and she did it over a long weekend. As far as I know there are only 3 of us other than HR who knows about her surgery. She took off 2 days had the surgery Friday and was back to work on Tuesday. I will do the same thing. My department is in its busy season and will only get busier as the holidays come and go. However I know that sitting at my desk will be just fine. But that's me. If you have had surgeries before and know how you react to things you can use that to help judge. But like others have said. It's all up to you. Talking to your surgeon is a great idea. Maybe also talking to your supervisor at work may be a good idea.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
