U get bad breath if you are in ketosis, which means you are burning fat. I wondered about that as that's what they said on Berstiens diet. I am going for my surgery Oct 14 & wonder the same thing. Look up ketosis....I guess we probably get it while losing the weight but when we level out (reach goal weight) it will go away. Will follow to see what the experienced people say. Good question.

I only really went into ketosis (getting the really bad breath) the first few weeks after surgery. Obviously I've lost 87 pounds, so I've been in ketosis off and on for a year, but no more dragon breath, lol. I do notice it's more prevalent in the first weeks of surgery with posters.

My favorite story was of a gal on here that was early out and her husband kept saying "What smells like sh*t?" LOL

Either it goes away or we get used to it & think it's not there anymore, lol. Sorry but I couldn't resist.

Use mints, gum, breath freshener, gargle, & brush your teeth of course.

Bad breath, for a while is nothing compared with the issues we have, including the loss of quality of life when we are obese.

My husband keeps telling me my breath smells like dead minnows, lol. The other night he was coming in to "make out" but had to turn his head away because he said the smell was so bad. I seriously laughed so hard I thought I would pop a stitch.

Does anyone have a little bit of a sore throat with their bad breath. My throat has sort of an acidy taste to it and it's a little sore as well.

If your having a sore throat with it you may need to take to your dr about acid reflux and get put on something for it so it don't damage your esophagus.

I had a terrible taste in my mouth and bad breath for the first few weeks. It did go away once I starting getting more liquids and calories in... like others mentioned I think it is related to being in such a deep state of ketosis.

@kranky813 A sore throat and acid taste is possibly from stomach acid overproduction, which is very common post op. Are you on Omeprazole or an acid reducer? You should definitely mention this to your doctor.

OMG! Mine is awful! I feel terrible about it too - I was sleeved on 9/2 and it's just not getting better - My husband and my kids say it smells like poop! I hope it doesn't last too much longer!

It simply means that your diet is low in carbs at the moment; it will go away as your diet improves. Some diets promote it as a good thing in order to sell you more of their diet products, but it has little to do with successful weight loss; one doesn't need to suffer through bad breath and BO to lose weight and burn fat.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
