Feeling of food stuck in chest

Recommended Posts

I just started pureeds today but am having some issues -- I feel like my food is stuck in my chest, it feels like a pressure on my chest. I did search around and it seems the advice is to eat slowly and small spoonfuls; I made sure I waited 1-2 mins between bites & ate with a teaspoon.

Possibly overeating? I can't feel the fullness/restriction yet (2 weeks out today), so could it be a sign of eating more than my new stomach needed?

Any advice/help would be great. Has anyone else experienced this recently?

Sounds perfectly normal to me. Uncomfortable yes, but normal. That's how I always knew I was eating too fast or eating something that did not agree with me. One thing I can tell you, do not think that taking a sip or Water will get that feeling out of your chest. Basically, the food is slowly seeping into your stomach. Add Water on top and you will only exacerbate the feeling. First time I vomited was because I thought something was stuck in my throat and needed a sip.

I am 6 months out and I still get that feeling from certain foods. That is the main reason I do not eat Pasta, tortillas nor bread. It clumps and sticks to my esophagus and makes me feel like I am choking. I talked to my surgeon and he recommended toasting bread or tortillas first to get rid of the elasticity. When I say tortillas and bread, I DO NOT mean white wonder-bread and the cheapy flour tortillas either. I've only had a hard toasted slice of a french loaf and a quarter of a whole wheat tortilla.

When I started with pureed food, I used a coffee spoon which is much smaller than a t-spoon and only put the food onto half the spoon and still chewed it to death. I guess I was being over cautious but it seemed to work well. I'm now on day one of soft foods and still using the coffee spoon lol

Hope it eases for you soon :D

I used a baby food spoon. It helped!

Yep definitely too big of bites and too fast. I am 10 weeks out and did it just last night. You could also try a baby spoon.

I got some nice appetizer spoons. Now, I usually use a t-spoon but just the tip (not a full spoonful). It definitely takes practice.

I did the baby spoon as well, I forgot to mention that. That is a really good tip too. Eat slowly, but carry a small spoon!

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
