VSG With Simultaneous Hiatal Hernia Repair

Recommended Posts

I had a hiatal hernia repair done at the same time. You have one more incision and no more gastric reflux. In very crude terms, they just pull the part of your esophagus that is not supposed to be above your diaphragm back down to where it belongs in your abdominal cavity. I only started having reflux about 2 months before surgery and I haven't had it since. I also didn't notice anything different than I feel like I would have noticed if I only had the sleeve surgery done. Fixing the hiatal hernia is often part of the process for sleeve surgery and very routine.

Thanks cause didn't know what to expect. How long was your recovery? like before you could return to work?
Thanks! I have to have a hiatal hernia repair also. My VSG surgery date is July 6, 2015. I am excited + a little nervous.
Good luck to you. I go in July 16 let me know how it goes
I sure will.

I had a hernia repair too. The only thing I noticed was after it was first done, it hurt to take a deep breath. That resolved after a few days. I also slightly noticed it when I returned to exercise classes. At the very end of the class the first couple of times, I had a slight pain from all the deep breathing.

I have that every time I undergo general anesthesia!

Doing the hernia repair during a VGS only adds a few minutes to your procedure and is done using the same ports that were already in place. We literally use a suture to close the defect and normally it only takes two or three small stitches.

I too had a hernia repair. Other than feeling like I had food stacked from my chest to my throat...after I ate...I had no other issue. I've never had a reflex problem...so not sure why it was even done...but I was told my surgeon does it to everyone. I was also told my "stacking" issue would go away when the HH repair...'relaxed'....after a couple of months. And it has.

Good luck to you.

I had the sleeve on April 27, 2015 along with the hernia repair too. I didn't even know I had the hernia. I'm just over two months post op and I feel great. I didn't feel discomfort from the hernia... It was from the stomach that I felt the pain. But it will go away. Just focus on Water and Protein and walking. This helps tremendously.

My sleeve was in March, with hernia repair. I was told not to lift anything over 5 pounds for 5 weeks. I accidentally picked up my granddaughter at about 3 weeks, but I was ok. For me it was hard to remember not to lift after about two weeks...but here I am, almost four months out! You'll be fine, just be mindful about lifting. :)

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
