WLS after hernia repair

Recommended Posts

I am meeting with a bariatric surgeon on June 5th and I will definitely discuss with him, but wondering if anyone has a previous hernia repair surgery and then had bariatric surgery? I had a massive incisional hernia repaired a couple of years ago with a lot of mesh (5 hour surgery, 500 internal stitches). If you have did have bariatric surgery after hernia repair, did you have any complications? Thank you!

I had major hernia surgery also. It was an open surgery. I also had gall bladder surgery with a HUGE incision. There were complications with that one. Plus, the hernia has torn out again. Lots to talk to the doctor about when I have my first appointment with him this Thursday.

From what I have read, they like to do hernia surgery AFTER WLS. I am also concerned about scar tissue. If worse comes to worse they can do WLS the open way so it will add another scar with more recovery time. But at 67, that's the least of my worries. :-)

Thank you for the info LousPeachy! I find it comforting knowing I'm not the only one with this issue. I wish you the best of luck when you speak to your surgeon. Please feel free to let me know what he/she says (but ONLY if you feel comfortable doing so). I hope everything goes wonderfully for you!

Hi I'm new to the forum I too have abdominal scars and mesh. I wanted the bypass but with these issues dr said I had to do the sleeve. Tonight at a support meeting I heard lots of negatives about the sleeve. But these folks did not have the sleeve. Someone they knew had it. I feel if you really want to change for the better you will do what is needed to be successful. But some good news would be appreciated

I had double hernia repair in 2014 and my surgeon is still proceeding with the RNY June 10th. It might just be the surgeon's discretion on what he wants to do but its doable to have both. I've also had my gallbladder removed and have had ulcers.

Thanks everyone for your input! I met with the surgeon today and he put all of my fears to rest. Sounds like I'm still a good candidate for laparoscopic and for the sleeve. The process has begun! Feeling so very thankful!!

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
